you can't actually use vlc for anything besides playing videos

The codec pack is a lot better than vlc.
Also with the codec pack and the 64bit tool, you get the video pre views in the folder.

I install codecs for encoding separately, most codec packs don't come with the most recent build of the VFW x264 codec
