The Canon 200mm F/1.8

I don't think there will be a huge price difference between the 600mm & the 800mm - there's actually slightly less glass in the 800. It'll still be in excess of £6000 though.

I think id still prefer the Sigma 300-800 F5.6 HSM tbh. Maybe not quite as sharp, but I think I would find a prime of that length quite restrictive. Oh, and this new Canon wouldn't fit on my Nikon anyway.:p

I really don't see what the market is for either the Canon 200mm f/2 IS or the Nikon 200mm f/2 VR. With the Nikon you pay over twice as much as the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, and for what? A stop faster but tons less versatile? I just can't see who'd buy it.

I assume you've not seen what the old 200mm f/1.8L is capable of then?

The sharpness and image quality are astonishing, better than either the 70-200 f/2.8L or the 200 f/2.8L. For indoor sports it's the lens to have, so much so that I believe it has actually appreciated in value since it was discontinued.

Where' the market for the 300mm 2.8 over the 4?

It's a stop quicker. For certain types of photography this can make all the difference. Indoor sports I imagine would be the best use for this lens. Gymnasiums and other such venues can have terrible lighting and thus you need a lens that is as quick as possible.

It's lovely, sure, but I just can't see how it's "over twice the price" lovely. I guess if your newspaper was buying...

The 800mm F5.6 seem a bit pointless when you can still a 1.4x converter on the 60omm F4 resulting in an 840mm F5.6 lens. Unless it's cheaper and/or offers much better image quality.

The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, expected to deliver telephoto performance surpassing the current top-of-the-line EF600mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto lens

Considering it's going to be better than a bare 600mm hopefully the IQ should be significantly better than one with a TC on.

From a business point of view these lenses just seem to be filling gaps in Canon's range that were covered by their competitors. Sigma have the 300-800 and a 800mm and Nikon have the 200mm F/2.
