As a follow on from my other thread here, I am also treating myself to a new surround sound system, because heck I deserve it:)

I am thinking of getting a wireless 7.1 surround system so I can put about 4 in Living room, a couple in bedroom and 1 in the hall or something of the sort. Budget of around £200 to spend, hopefully this is enough and I will be using it through media centre on pc/xbox.

Not sure if only speakers I need or an actual system, what would you guys recomend.

Cheers for any help.:D

I hope i haven't greatly misunderstood you, but i don't think you know how surround sound works. You can't just place loads of speakers in different rooms to surround thr whole house :p

Aside from that, £200 is a little low, as i expect you need an amp an all aswell... you would be settling for a HTIB ( Home theatre in a box ).

Wireless speakers are also not considered a good idea. They are a gimmick created by philips/sony and really aren't good quality.

Nope you did not misunderstand me, I am actually a complete dufus:p

I kind of know what surround sound is, it's something to do with positioning the speakers to diffuse the sound so that the audience is generally not conscious of where the surround information originates. Or am I wrong:confused:

I just thought as the flat I am moving into is quite small having a few wireless speakers around the place would allow me to listen clearly to music e.t.c whilst in Kitchen e.t.c

What would you advise for me to get, so as to get the required result?

That'll sound horrid. If you want multi-room get a stereo pair of speakers for each room with a distribution amplifier/power amplifier.

You're looking at more than £200....unless you just buy a few cheapo PC 2.1 systems and wire it upto a switch box or something.

I posher method would be to have a media streamer in each room, each connected to your LAN, with your music hosted on a PC.

bottom line

you cant do what you want to do for the money. £200 is not enough to get a multiroom setup, no matter what way you cut it. Try adding anther 0 and you're going to be talking

for £200, the most you're going to get is an out of the box home cinema system which is 5.1 it will be cheap, but will do as entry. Pop down to your local highstreet retailer, take a look at what you fancy, then find it much much cheaper at www.pricerunner.co.uk

and just in case you didnt realise. 7.1 5.1 etc.. are different channels of the same soundtrack. they play different parts. so the front channel plays the speech, the sub does the deeb bass booming noises, the front left does effects that occur to the front left, the rear left speakers does effects that occur to the rear left (like a plane comming from off screen to the left) etc...

you cant get the speakers in 7.1 systems to play different things. they only play different parts of the same movie. and not all movies support 7.1 .most only do 5.1 so 7.1 can be pointless.

Exacty what he said. For that money, plus a little more, i'm sure you could just about get a cheap 2.1 setup in every room. depending on your music source though ( you wouldn't be able to buy media streamers for that price, etc )

Or you could get a decent stereo setup in one room. Either way you will need a little more money then £200 i'm afraid. :(
