What is the best way of dealing with stiff soreaching muscles after excercise? I have taken up hockey again and had my first match today. My muscles are so sore stiff and aching, I am walking like john wayne and finding it very difficult and painful getting up when i sit?
Thanks in advance guys :)

Man up and handle it, your muscles are growing and its a good sign. If im not in pain the day after a workout, quite frankly; I didnt workout properly.

DOMS is not a good way of telling if you have worked out hard enough.
growing is the best way of telling, over a long period.

not having DOMS could be down to your body reacting a lot better to the stress you have placed it under, be it post workout fueling of decent cooling down / stretching and rest ;]

well i played last saturday even though my legs were still sore. My thighs and lower of my buttocks as result are again in pain. I felt a very strong twinge/pull on my legs on saturday but i struggled on to play the whole game through. Should i sit out my game on this saturday till my legs are fully healed or just play through the pain? What do you guys think?

Very cold bath first thing after exercise is definitely the best move, it's a bit late for that so rest is probably the best thing. You might be OK for Saturday though if you don't exert yourself till then.

well i am not going to training this evening, and have been putting on the deep heat on the legs. What else can i do? I might go for a slight slow jog on friday evening and see how my legs feel

I thought it was hot showers/baths that are best not cold???

Nah, straight after exercise a very cold bath (freezing if you're brave and have the icecubes) is the best way, it reduces inflammation in the muscles and some reckon that the slowed blood flow increases the effectiveness of lactic acid removal. Definitely works for me either way.

My cousin in south africa is a hockey player, while on tour his coach made the whole team stand in an incredibly cold lake after each game, he said no one got stiff at all!

will try that, personally i can't stand really cold or hot showers prefer warm, will try spraying really cold water on my legs, thanks

IF you haven't done the whole ice cold water thing after the game, apparently the best way to relieve it is with some light exercise of the affected muscles, stretching and\or a massage. At least I remember finding those as supposed good relievers a while back when I got into a pretty similar situation - at the time I could barely walk my calf muscles were so damn stiff. Even with them though, none are an instant solution. You really will just have to wait it out to some extent I think.

Is the general consensus that you shouldn't work out the same muscle group two days running?

I did a pretty good workout the last two nights, and I've got chance to go to the gym again tonight, but not sure to hit the same muscle groups again?

I'm not aching too bad to be honest, only my traps, but I can leave out the shrugs?
