Finally bought myself a PS3 the other day. Spent a fortune in 'a shop' and got a
60GB PS3 + Folklore, Heavenly Sword, RFoM Games
Casino Royal, Open Season, 300 BluRay
Family Guy S6, Green Wing S1&2
and Sony Remote and HDMI cable
All for about £470 :)

So far I've spent most of my time building new furniture to accommodate this bad boy but also played LocoRoco and FF7 (looks great BTW).

I have to say I'm impressed so far by how quiet it is and how good it looks on my TV. I did a comparison with Casino Royal, SD version in my 360 via VGA and BD version on my PS3 via HDMI and there was a very noticeable difference (obviously). The BD the so good...almost too good if that makes sense.

Anyway I have a few questions if anyone would like to oblige.

1) How do I go about streaming media like on my 360?

2) My background colour was different today than it was yesterday, why?

3) Can I charge my controller whilst my console is off?

4) It is safe to have vertical (unlike the 360) right?

5) *saved space for when I remember what question 5 was*

Thanks.

Ever so quickly

(1) I'll leave that for someone else, I'm out of time (or browse these forums, it's all in there.

(2) It changes colour by itself depending on time of day, or you can set a photo as a background picture if you'd rather

(3) I charge my controller via my PCs USB port, so yes

(4) I have my standing vertically, no problem

(5) I'll try and let you know when you know ;)

V1N.

EDIT: I picked up one of these for £12. It's a stand to put the PS3 in to stand it vertically, has a bigger "base" when it's on it's side, making it tougher to knock over by accident, and has some blue neon style lights, which light up the side of the PS3.... which CAN be turned off if you find it too cheesy ;)

Number of options, You can try Winamp, Windows Media Player, TVersity

2) My background colour was different today than it was yesterday, why?

It should change to a different colour each month

3) Can I charge my controller whilst my console is off?

Not that I know of, best thing to do is just charge it when your watching a film, they seem to last ages without the need for recharge anyway

Had mine vertical since I first got it

Kool and the gang :)

Hope that helps mate enjoy your new toy :)

Edit: I too have one of the stands V1N mention, they're Grrrreat!

why isn't it safe to have the 360 vertical?, mines been vertical since launch, both consoles are desighed for vertical or horizontal

enjoy your PS3

I've just read horror stories about 360's eating discs when vertical, never had or seen it first hand tho. Just never had the balls to risk it.

I got to say that I'm totally unimpressed with BD, but before I get crucified let me explain! Initially I was very impressed watching Casino Royale on it, then I tried watching the regular DVD version on it and I have to say I was far more impressed with how well the upscaled DVD version compared to the BD version - this I think is a direct result of the PS3 being exceptionally good at upscaling DVD's, but it does also show up BD as not quite as impressive as some might think.

I use TVersity, perfect for my needs, just do a google.

Funny, I did a similar test.
Not quite the same, as when I tried the DVD of Casino Royale in my PS3, it was before they had the upscaler. But, the level if detail was exceptional compared to the DVD.

The opening scenes, where they're fighting, the detail in the faces of the people in the background, doesn't come across in the DVD.

Scenes like.. where were they, in Rome was it? Near the end anyway, where they do an aerial shot across a large square, on the bluray, you can see details even on people in the distance... not to mention many other scenes that made me go wow!

Of course, it depends on different things. I assume you were watching at 1080p?

The PS3 upscaler does a great job, and restores the sharpness, but, what it can't do is include all that extra detail.

I remember when I got AVP as well, a film I've seen many times on DVD, when I saw the bluray, I was blown away, as I really noticed the level of detail, above what I'd seen before.

What LCD have you got and did you set it up properly (disabled all enhancements and turned down backlight?)

hahaha, yes, I used the AVIA set up disc and all configured nicely - I'm a bit of an audio/videophile and spend a lot of time over at avforums, so I'm pretty sure I know how to set up my bleeding TV!:p btw It's a rather spiffy Panny PZ700.

btw, I'm not saying that BD isn't good, just that when compared to a well upscaled DVD it isn't anywhere near as impressive as I'd expected. I suggest you give it a try if you have a movie on both BD and DVD, then come back and tell us how you got on as I'm curious now whether it's just me.........but please don't give me a succession of "it looks marvellous on my XXXX" without having actually tried.:D

I found the difference between a DVD and Blu Ray also smaller than expected, I have Casino Royale on both formats.

It wasn't until I watched in detail that the difference becomes noticable with things like details in the background and sharpness, I also think that having a good LCD that is setup properly makes the difference smaller as it is advantageous for SD DVD's, I went to avforums to get advice to setup my 40W2000 and it makes a huge difference over the default settings.

The Casino Royale DVD is a good transfer, so possibly not the best comparison..

I can sympathise with the comments that sometimes it's not that big a leap, on some films it certainly isn't...

But, having SKY HD does give you a unique opportunity to have the same film on SD and HD channels next to each other, so that you can keep flicking between the two, and you find that actually there is a huge amount more detail (especially in backgrounds/clothing textures etc) on the HD.. If you 'notice' all the extra detail is another thing.. I am constantly amazed at the clarity and crispness of HD films..

You wouldn't belive the difference when blown up on a large screen. On my 32" tv there isn't a huge amount in it, but with my projector the SD version looks absolutely awful. The difference really couldn't be more obvious - it's like comparing something on youtube to a decent dvd.
