2900 Pro 1GB or 8800GTS 640MB

Both are within a few percent of eachother in most benchmarks. My personal choice would be the 8800GTS 640 because I had problems with a 2900 but many people swear by the 2900.

Neither, take the 2900 Pro on offer or wait for the next lineups of products. According to many sources, they're imminent, be that as it may. :)

Id get the Sapphire 2900Pro 512MB on special. Cheaper than the 8800 & just as quick.
Don't really know about the 8800 as I don't have one. But after a bit of trawling round the net to find comparative reviews the 2900 pro seemed a much better "bang-for-your-buck" proposition. As people keep saying you're getting an XT for £70 less.

I went ahead and bought one and I have been having plently of fun overclocking it. The net result do far is that my 3d6 score (for what it is worth) went from about 6700 with the 1950xt to 11200 with the 2900 oc'ed (just one day of playing with it. That's on a system that hasn't seen a clean instal of Windows xp in over a year. The card has oc'ed past XT settings.

In terms of gameplay I can now play Med 2 Total War on full settings whereas before chugged - so that's a result.

Plenty happy with the 2900.:D

There’s nothing wrong with the 2900 series, I don’t know why people think that there is. I’ve never had a problem with mine.
