Goodbye England, Hello Europe? ( :( )

From a fairly quick skim read there doesn't appear to be anything too contentious in that treaty, it stops short of being a constitution and the UK seems to have retained all the veto powers it had before which makes it a bit of a non-event as far as we are concerned.

its okay. as soon as scotland gets independant we will be out :p
Hope thats soon as well, quite the drain on Englands economy to support you!

Why does this creep into so many threads? It isn't even directly on point and both points are dubious anyway, we don't yet know if Scotland would be out of the EU, chances are high that some negotiation would have to take place but that we'd be pretty quickly back in and the comment about the drain on Englands economy is also a bit pointless - near enough everywhere outside London constitutes a net drain on the economy.

england???

you mean Britain or the UK.

Well, technically, the UK is short for Britain, just it goes like this:

"The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

They are one of the same really, but I always say the 'I live in the UK' or 'I'm from England'

Your not from Scotland or Wales are you!? I'm from England, I live in England and I'm proud of it! Would you catch a Scots or Welish person saying, 'Oh I live in Britain!'? Clearly not, they'd say 'Oh I'm from Wales'. Therefore, I say I'm from England.

Political niceities gone mad, me thinks!

Pah if it wasnt for us wasting our money on the German world wars england would still be an empire worthy of the name United Kingdom!

But yeah this is the new millenium and there are no borders on the net, so sure why not. Roll on a single stupidly named currency, and have all the rich countries join forces with the poor countries to make us all poor!

*edit - after re-reading I realise theres not many indications I was joking, so heres one :p :p :p

Wonderful lets open our selves to higher tax, possibility of the euro and more imigrants, cheers Gordon, doing a fab job you ***!

This is why it's often a shame everyone is allowed to vote. Some people clearly don't have a clue. How on earth does it open ourselves to the possibility of the Euro any more than it already has?

Europe are dieing for us to join completley, the surrender of the GB pound to the euro currency will be a gold mine for them. The queen wont allow this ;) Im not worried.

What? are they going to melt all our coins? What has this to do with Graham Norton?

can someone clarify something for me:

I heard a snippet on the news about this and i remember hearing that we, the UK, will getting an opt out on Human rights? ehh? Whats this about?

I'd always say I'm British, I was born and brought up in England. I hate it when people are like, "I'm English" or "I'm Welsh" etc.

But the thing is, how often do you hear someone from Wales saying 'oh I'm from Britain'. They don't its just a fact! The majority of Welsh people consider themselves to be Welsh, not 'British'. Well, thats not strictly true, but they call themselves Welsh rather than British. Why can't I call myself English?!

As the song goes, I'm an Englishman in New York, not a 'Britishman in New York.

Would you go and rename things like The Flying Scotsman to 'The Flying Great Britishman'?

Common, lets be realistic!

I wonder sometimes whether life would be so different if we were part of a European federal state in the same vein as the US.

After all, as an individual how much input do people have into the decision-making in 'higher' politics? For example - if we were governed from Brussels instead of London, would our lives actually change significantly?

The whole concept of extending stages of government from local councils to regional, then onto national means that adding another stage on top would barely make a difference.

Certainly makes one wonder about what the 'big deal' about sovereignty is to the individual, given how it's pretty much irrelevant in day-to-day life. :)

Actually, Great Britian and the UK are different and can't be used interchangably.

Like you have said, the UK is GB and Northern Ireland, plus other territories like the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and places like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

For GB to be used correctly, it must only refer to England, Scotland and Wales.
