I've got the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, but am having some trouble installing Vista. Didnt know whether to post in software or here. Basicly I've read around a lot online and its a very common problem;
when i go to install vista, it boots off the cd does the first loading screen then takes ages to get to the language select. bizzarely if i eject the cd it jumps to it. once I've selected language and install it says please wait for ages. again if i eject the cd it comes up saying it needs a driver for a drive. when i select browse it freezes up!
I've disabled every feature and device I can think of, updated the bios, just got the basic system in.

Other bits of H/W are:
P4 3.2 Ghz
2 GB Corsair
NEC DVD drive
160GB SATA Maxtor HDD

Thanks if anyone has any solutions.

Hi, any other PCI cards in there, if so remove them and try again, also which bios version are running?

Nope nothing else in there, there was an onboard wireless card which I removed hoping for a result.

It's the latest bios, think 2206, there is a beta out but I generally dont go near betas.

At first i thought the gfx might be the problem as its a nVidia 8400 (single not SLi) but I changed the gfx and same problem.

Last night I managed to install XP without any trouble, which is a bit worrying! I was hoping someone on here might have the same board.

Hi again, well the only difference I can think of is that vista is on a dvd and xp is on a cd. Not sure if I'm on the right line but it might be worth trying another DVD player...

One step ahead Im afraid, tried that, same problem. Tried a different vista disk too. Im pretty sure it has something to do with vista and the IDE controller.

Its 64 bit vista, but tried a 32 disk, same problem. Would you mind sharing your spec bringerofdecay?

Hi again, damm, oh well, I know I've had vista running on that motherboard ok. Hve you tried this http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=1&model=P5W+DH+Deluxe&SLanguage=en-us forum at all?

BTW Which sata port have you got the HD connected too?

I've got it plugged in to SATA1 had a quick look on the asus forums but not much help. was hoping for a quick fix.

I had a P5W DH and DVD Writer problems and I switched the (IDE) Burner to Ultra DMA mode in the bios. It fixed any disc-related problems that I had. The make of the burner is NEC btw.

That is interesting, I'll give that a go. I've managed to install vista using a USB drive, not really a solution. the internal drive is still playing up. Hopefully Ultra DMA will fix it.

Did you plug it in to Jmicron or the other IDE connection?

My disc drive is plugged into the blue IDE connecter (i.e. the one meant for the HDD) although I'd imagine it'd work the same plugged into the black one at the bottom of the board. If U-DMA 1 or 2 doesn't work just try every other setting, there's quite a few available.

Its just bizzare, it will work with XP but not vista. therese somthing in vista which screws it all up....

Problem solved; had to go into device manager, properties of ATA Channel 0, then disable DMA in the advanced options, not an ideal solution but it works.

Thats probably the bizzarest problem I've seen in vista so far.

Hi, well I'm glad you've got it fixed, does seem strange, something I've never heard of doing before and something I didn't have to do to mine...

This board has a weird bios though, I can never disable HD Audio Controller, it just keeps resetting (I have the latest bios and a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic which I can never use). Isn't there a "Vista-only" option in the bios for configuring the board to run properly in that OS? It's under on-board devices configuration I think.

I'll have a look, there is that option for running the sound card i think. It is slightly disconcerting how many bios updates have been released. Must be one problem after another.

Hi, all the most recent bios versions seem to have this 'feature' of turning back on the onboard sound. There is a huge thread over here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110193 which might be of some help. I've still got this motherboard in a box somewhere, I swopped it out for a P5B Premium Vista Edition because of severe overheating issues...
