Hi,
I want to get a new tv - but not too sure what to get. A while ago i just plunged in and got one that i thought would be allrite (ordered it online) but it was very crap quality (think its called ghosting ... the image from previous frames were still showing up) so sent it back (this was 6 month ago - went back to my old tv).

At the moment i've noticed a certain red big brand high street store has a sale on, so cheap tvs - so i am thinking of getting one this week. I went in there and they had a 50" for £1199 - and it seemed quite good too. Though i am not sure if i want a 50" (too big i think, for my room). Although i did notice in all the tv's in there really they didn't seem to be of great quality. compared to the quality of a normal computer monitor, they all seemed to have really sharp edges and not quite right. Some were really bad too (had like bits of an image shown where it is meant to be, and about an inch to the side, if that makes sense).

Anyone got any recommendations? Looking to spend between 600-1200 ish. Also, what things should i be looking out for? All i know at the moment is that i want high definition.

Thanks
ps - what are most people going with in terms of hd dvd or blu ray? Is there a "winner" yet?

Check out the Panasonic PX70 plasma range. Size depends on what you can afford. 42" is <£800 though.

Nah, not for games really.

90% of the time just normal tv (which means really widescreen is a bit pointless? aren't most tv programs at 4:3 still? - though i will still get a widescreen..)

Saw this post http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10313429&postcount=14 saying that basically for normal tv, plasma is better. I always thought plasma was the "older" and "worse" technology when compared to lcd?

Been looking at a review and prices for the TH42PX70 and it looks very nice.

Most 'new' TV shows are recorded widescreen, certainly the big stuff from the states like Stargate Atlantis, Bones etc. BBC are doing a lot of high def stuff now, widescreen is pretty much the norm for new production now.

Of course repeats of older programmes are still 4:3. 99.9999% of movies are widescreen or superwidescreen so rented or bought dvd/hd-dvd/blu-ray are widescreen anyway.

I have the older TH42PX60 and its a great TV.. and so is the PX70.

Plasma is the best slim/flat screen technology. Deeper blacks, faster moving blur free displays. Its still under active development and its going to be around for a long time. Its not the best tech for gaming as it can suffer from phosphor burn (just like a CRT telly), but its advantages are deeper blacks, richer colours, and more accurate colour rendering.

Of course there are good plasma's and bad ones. The better the panel the smother the colour graduations, and the more resistant to screen burn.

My advise to anyone buying a new TV is 'Gamers' buy an LCD panel, but movie lovers should go plasma. (Assuming a projector is not an option).

Of course for 'occasional' gaming a plasma's ok, its just not best for people who wanna play a game for hours on end, burning logos scoreboards etc into the panel.

Sony KDL40W2000U is a full 1080P LCD TV.My sister got hers for less than £900.Gets very good reviews on home cimema choice website.
