Ok so you all remember the R600 power tests I did, well now I have done one with my G80. I wanted to see how much I could save by setting up a low clocked 2D profile (290/675/900) in Rivatuner, rather than having the card run at the same speed all the time (575/1350/900)
These were the results (test was done with all applications shut down and PC running totally idle both times)
2D Normal (575/1350/900)
2D Modified lower clock setting (290/675/900)
The temperatures also reduced by 4-5c which means you could possibly turn the fan down to compensate and have less noise?
To do this it's very simple,
Grab Rivatuner 2.05
Go to clocking tab
Click enable driver-level harward overclocking
Select Standard 2D
Now reduce the core clocks all the way down leaving the memory alone
Save in a profile
Tick "Apply overclocking at Windows startup"
Jobs a good un!
The gains are minimal when compared to the R600 where there was a fairly big saving to be had, whether this is worth it you'll have to decide but I have seen people asking how much power can be saved so there you have it really. Im curious why NVIDIA didn't do low clocked 2D profiles anyway?. Maybe they thought there were not enough gains to be had?
Anyone know how much 15w would save you per year?

comparing this to the likes of my 360 which uses around 130w
