Removing Half Life 2 from Steam?

Howdy!

I've just bought a copy of HL2 Orange Box for the PC (boxed retail) as I want to play EP2 (not interested in the others), but I have a copy of HL2 and EP1 (boxed retail versions) and want to give them to my mate who has never played them.

Well how do I go about doing this? Because I registered my serial code with steam on both those games, so I assume if my mate installs them and uses those serials on steam it will say they are already in use right? Is there a way of telling steam that the game no longer belongs to me, and I want the serial to be free to be used by my mate... is this how it works? Or will the serial still work for him?

You can gift them, which will transfer them to his steam account. Erm, I cant find it at the moment, but if you look around steam it should be there.
 
I have a sneaky feeling the gift thing is only if you bought HL2 before and then bought Orange Box. As there is only one serial for all five games with orange box, I doubt if you will be able to give HL2 away. I could be wrong though.

Thats what I done howie? I bought HL2 on release, and then bought EP1 a few weeks after that release.

I've just bought Orange Box, so will have HL2 and EP1 just sitting on my shelf doing jack... so might aswell give them away as I will have them in orange box.

that is what you meant right?
 
If you have your release copy of HL2 in your Steam account already and you say you got EP1 a few weeks after, I assume thats in your Steam account too, install the Orange Box (All 5 games) and when thats done, next to HL2 and EP1 it should have 1 free gift or something like that, then you enter your mates E-Mail address and click send :)

Genius, thats exactly what I have. I have EP1 installed, ive not got HL2 installed though, cos I finished that game ages ago, but I assume it wont matter if its installed or not.

So when I get my Orange Box (tomo hopefully) I will install and should be able to gift it to my pal!

This has been answered a few times already - searching for the word "gift" would give you the info you want but basically

you will be gifting your new copies of HL2/EP1 - after you have registered your orange box key in steam the word "gift" should appear next to the 2 games you can give away.

Your mate should install the small 600k steam program and create an account then you can send him the gifts to his new steam account - might even work using email addresses but he has to install steam any way so what the heck.

Whether you give him the old boxed versions or not is up to you but I suspect that those cd keys will remain tied to your account , if your mate tries to use the boxed cd keys he will probably get a message saying the key has already been used.
 
Oh so he will get his own CD key aswell?.. Or I suppose he never enters a key, as he just gets the game? Ah whatever, it makes sense now and Ill gift it to him when I get Orange Box!

Actually, can I just clarify, the game doesnt have to be INSTALLED to gift does it? As I say above, I have EP1 installed, but not HL2, will I need to install it for it so show up this "gift" icon?

If I don;t need it installed, then I will uninstall EP1 now, as that will not be able to be used by me anyway.
 
you just need the games that you want to gift in your current steam games list (doesn't matter if they're installed or not)

Yeah thats exactly right. I was eluding to people wanting to give away HL2 from orange box if they hadn't already bought it before.

Typical, my pal conveniently bought himself a copy of Orange Box yesterday, after reading reviews :)

So I'm gonna give them away on the Giveaway thread on this forum... I'll post there gifting them to someone when I actually get/install my copy of Orange box thou.
