GPU physics AKA Havok FX has been dropped from Hellgate London which was to be the first game to support it.

http://forums.hellgatelondon.com/showthread.php?p=172668#post172668 Need to be in the beta to read. NDA dropped.

“Havok FX is a related product using a GPU to simulate huge numbers of simple rigid objects. We did integrate an early test version of Havok FX a few years back, but it is not used in the shipping version of Hellgate.”

Well that just reset the GPU physics game list back to 0.

PhysX will not die yet its doing way to well. The PPU might do on the other hand. Then again if they keep feeding PhysX profits into the PPU it will keep going.

Ageia messed up with UT3 its no where near as good as it could have been.

ppu is not bad in ut3, it purley provides a speed boost and people with and without a ppu can all play together online. id say thats a successful implementation of the ppu in ut3. although its not a 90 quids worth of ppu implementation. the card needs to drop down to 50 quid in price.

At 90 quid its better to put that into a new graphics card then a PPU.

If you got sli ultras i cant see u needing the PPu for extra speed lol. They just dont seem worth it. If i had sli ultras id rather get rapters in raid for the hell of it.

But i dunno, if you got the money might as well just put a phyx card in and see if u can get some extra graphics effects a few years later :p

To be perfectly honest, for atleast the next few years I can only see PPU's being properly integrated into single player games, not multiplayer.

Multiplayer games you have the issue of people having the ppu and others not having the ppu...So how do you makes thing's fair etc etc? Especially if having the ppu privides better physics ie thing's like destructive enviroments that can actually stop you from taking a certain route yada yada...

However I can see ppu's being usefull in multiplayer games for people with and without them in thing's like hl2 style physics ( ie bottles and what not), just general ooooh eye candy type props...Cause they don't physically affect the game play.

Then of course you have effects like bullet shells and decals etc that could somehow use the resources from the ppu's? God knows.

I just did a test using the PhysX SDK. I got 23fps with 1250 ridgid bodies. 2 of my cores were at 50% and thats with the CPU at 2ghz(speedstep) so that aint bad without a PPU

Has anyone heard about Nvidia including a PPU in the 9 series? It may have been a rumour but, ive heard something about it.

Matt.

Now that four cores is very affordable and eight core CPUs are on the way, the PPU isn't going to last. I was a supporter of GPU physics, but it's obvious now even that was dead from the word go with massive increases in CPU power. Where GPU physics wasn't a super solution though, the PPU is just an expensive insult.
