Hello there. With all the drama about PSU's right now i was wondering if you could clarify what would happen if i bought all the parts needed to build a pc, ram, mobo, cpu etc. But the PSU i bought killed everything the moment it was all pluged in and turned on.

Would i be able to rma everything or just rma the PSU. I presume this will be the same for every shop so its not really aimed at OCUk in particular just to clairfy for my own reassurance.

I presume that after a month or what ever this would not count and if the psu died then id only get an rma for that and not everything it took out. But if it was instant and killed it all would i be able to rma everything?

LOL. I've just looked at your sig and it twigged why you asked that question in my thread :D

I really wouldn't worry about it too much. You only ever hear about failures and my dad was just very unlucky.

If you're that worried about a PSU killing other components try it in an older PC first.

LOL, i dont intend on losing a grand to a psu :)

I like the idea of trying it in an old pc though. I could put it in this one and take out the hard drive which could be of some value to me. In fact, how much would i need in there to get it to power up enough to check if it explodes? lol.

PSUs all go through testing, so the chance of it blowing would be remote. If you couldn't RMA it, then just claim off house insurance.

Modern PSu's should, as I understand, have failsafes that ensure the rest of your parts don't get hurt in case it explodes.
In terms of warranty, RMA's the word.

I have first hand knowledge of this from when my Hiper blew up and took out a brand new motherboard. The Hiper was 12-14 months old with a 3yr manufacturer warranty and was just out of the retailers 12 month period. After contacting Hiper (with great difficulty) several times they would not replace the motherboard and told me to claim off the house insurance for it even though the psu took it out when it blew up. They would replace the psu under warranty but that was it. In the end i told them to stick it and took it outside and pelted it with a sledgehammer. Made me feel better anyway. The shop i got the mobo from would'nt take it as an RMA as it was caused by the psu. I expected that anyway. They said that Hiper should replace it. Yeah right!! That cost me well over £300 in the end factoring in the cost of the mobo it took out, the replacement and the replacement psu.

What if you didn;t tell the shop what took it out and it just died all of a sudden? Put a new hiper psu in ther and take it to the shop as proof that it wasn't the psu haha :)

House insurance ATW:eek:

Strange how no ocuk shop member has come to answer my question? I presume this means they would not honor the rmaing a full system that was just built and the psu took it all out.

any brand. Just in general. if a psu was to go boom just after you purchased all your parts and it took out some things. Would you be able to rma the broken parts back or does it not count as the psu killed them? thats all i want to know.

I'll bring this to the attention of some shop guys.

Just because they don't reply to a thread doesn't mean they're ignoring it. They have too much work to do to waste time on here, that's my job.

The best way to get an answer would be to ring them.

It would be nice for all to see the answer though. ;)

thanks mate. I presumed many people would want to hear it here.

Also some time ago i pointed out there was a typo on one of the ahrd drives where you advertise it as 16mb cache then say it has 8mb cache. i was told it was fixed but when i checked tis still the same?

Is my browser screwing up though as things like pictures dont show a lot of the time i dont know why. When i turn my fire wall off they show though grrr stupid norton.

Check it out. It still shows as a typo on my browser: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-111-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=167

Just as it's near on impossible for a retailer to prove that you have killed a CPU from overclocking it the same would apply with a killed system from a faulty PSU.

Also the chances of a PSU failing and then as well taking out every component in the rig is VERY unlikely!
People are also assuming that every 'PSU killed my rig' post on the internet is down too faulty PSU's! On many occasions it's actually because it has been incorrectly installed.

In this instance the retailer would be legally obligated to offer a full-refund including cost of returning the product due too incorrectly advertising it.
This also applies to DOA (DeadOnArrival) products! ie the retailer is legally obligated to refund cost of returning the product (decent retailers will actually arrange for it too be picked up)
