No, he isnt, as his mileage works out as 12k per year. Pointless.

Pointless?

You can justify my need for a diesel down to the milage i do? what about the other attributes? MPG, more reliable/durable engines?

Are you buying a car to drive or give you a warm fuzzy feeling of self worth as you see an odometer reading of 49k?

If that does float his boat whats the problem? :p

Like the fact that a diesel costs more to buy, costs more to service, and the fuel costs more?

A diesel is only financially worthwhile if you do a decent milage.

Thats right.

From a financial perspective, yes.

what about the other attributes? MPG,

Over 12k miles per year:

Golf 1.9 TDI 110: £978 of diesel @ 97ppl
Golf 1.6 105: £1327 of petrol @ 95ppl

So, a diesel would save you in pure fuel terms just 95 pence a day. And thats before you take into account the fact they are more expensive to buy and marginally more expensive to service.

more reliable/durable engines?

A modern diesel is no more reliable nor durable than a modern petrol engine. Residuals for diesels are stronger but you are buying used, so the higher resale value of a diesel is cancelled out by the higher purchase price so no benefit there. Infact, as a car ages, the price falls and so the difference in residual falls. You will pay more in terms of price difference when you buy your diesel than you will receive back in terms of price difference when you sell it.

But why buy a car thats going to cost me a lot to run, especially the way i drive, i do put my foot down?

Example, my boss drives similar to me, he used to own a golf gti, he was getting 16-19mpg when he put his foot down, reason he sold it was because it cost a hell of a lot to run.

Bearing in mind that im under 25 and i cant go anything above group 11 insurance really otherwise it will start taking the money down on what i actually spend on the car itself.

Im on a budget.

If someone finds me the same car with the same price and milage then please let me know :)

have you done any insurance quotes on this car? what is your budget, inclusive of insurance?

Take the money you save from NOT buying a diesel and use it to fuel the petrol?

More fun, and still costs less.

Becuase as my figures show, other cars are not going to cost you a lot more to run. People cannot be bothered to do the maths before buying a car and simply assume diesel = cheaper irrespective of personal circumstances. This contributes to the higher prices diesels command.

If you put your foot down in a Golf diesel with 110bhp nothing really happens anyway, the cabin just gets more noisy.

Example, my boss drives similar to me, he used to own a golf gti, he was getting 16-19mpg when he put his foot down, reason he sold it was because it cost a hell of a lot to run.

Why compare a Golf GTi to a slow diesel Golf, assuming your boss had one of the good Golfs? Compare it to a petrol 1.6 or something, which won't be returning 16mpg ever.

Ok ok point taken,

im not buying it

You'd do wise to listen to the suggestions on this forum. I went from being convinced about a Corsa to buying a Focus all thanks to this lot :D

Help me find an alternative then.

Im set on a diesel engine, other alternatives iv been looking at are Seat, Audi, Peugeot, Vauxhall.

I have a budget of £6.5k, obviously the lower the better.

seat leon yeh good car much cheaper then golf

fox when you worked out that miles/fuel cost calc what mpg were you going on?

just nipping to the office doing 100 miles per week my old focus used approx £25-£30 of petrol, my new one uses about £10-£11 driving the same way.

It's always such a pleasure to give free advice out on this forum..

you love it when you convinced someone not to.lol

Get a 1.4 golf if running costs is the main issue. or a 1.2. lol.

Wish petrol was still 95ppl. Its 98.9ppl in my area now. :(

You could have a newer Fabia VRS for less than that. 2004 ish, less than 50k or thereabouts. 130PD engine, lovely 6 speed box etc. Depends if you can see past the badge....
Insurance group 9 too...

only problem is the Fabia VRS, is ugly and only comes in a 5 door.. I'm biased, being the owner of tdi anniversary golf tnough ;)

That's what I was hinting at too.

But I think he's a bit 'badge weary'

I've posted a Seat Leon TDI above which is in his area for a lot less, he seems to have ignored it :<
