Hi I sold a fully working Athlon 3200 and fan last week, tested it in a system that had been running ir perfectly for 2 years, today I got this email

"Hi, i recieved the Cpu on wednesday 17/10/07 this delay was due to the post strike.
I paid ****** Computer to put in the CPU and 2g of DDR ram.
They said that my mother broad would support this CPU but it would be unclocked and work as 2500.They said this was of no consequences because the 3200 ran hot all the time.
Well the computer after running for 2 days kept on stopping after 2min to 30min. i return the computer back to the shop and they had inform me that they had noticed that the Cpu was discoloured underneath and they had initially suspected it was damage by getting too hot.

I have spent £50 pounds on ram,the £60 on this CPU and £135 for maintenance at ****** Computers.

I have not had this CPU a week and have no PC at home can we please sort out a refund of some kind through paypal please.
I do not know you but i am being very honest with you and i have heard some horror story about some ebay transaction, can this not be one of them.
Thank you, please reply"

Now I know the cpu was working fine, what are you guys thoughts on this? She even said herself the shop installed it and sent it to her, they obviously thought it was fine, she used it for 2 days without probelms before these lockups.I mailed back and asked what mobo she had so I could look myself to see if there were any problems with other users. Thanks in Advance

he sounds to friendly and is making it to easy for the refund. I thinks taht he is trying to switch the cpu for one taht doesn't work.

If you are certain it was working report him to ebay and make sure they check him out.

Sound like a bunch of cowboys at the shop.
Any decent technician would have noticed and physical defects upon the 1st time of installing it, they were prob told it was 2nd hand, fudged the install and tried to shift the blame.
It aint your fault mate, really.
Or yeah - I dishonest ebayer you sold to, whats his feedback like?

Here's hoping you're not one of these negative feedbackers? Otherwise I may think differently. lol

I had a similar problem when I sold a CPU on Ebay. What happened was, the really clever people at a well known PC retailer didn't know that they needed to set the multiplier to the correct one.

In your case, I think the cpu should be set to 7 (multiplier) and the ram at 266 (FSB) and that should fix the problem :)

So much for all these clever people at well known retailers lol

Hi, yes sold as seen, didnt offer return as I was fully aware it worked and took great care in putting it in antistatic packaging, then making sure it was fully protected.Do you know how this works, if she contacts paypal how would they treat this, have sold lots on eby and first time this has happened

if it was working before post it is not your fault
if it was damaged in post - its still not your fault
it was obviously working as it booted up therefore the error is located at install

you cant be held responsible for some idiot that cant install a cpu properly. thats like me going to a garage without a license and buying a car, crashing it on the way out and asking for a refund.

Lol she even stated it worked fine for a full 2 days before these errors started.

Sounds like they didn't use paste or the fan failed, causing it to overheat.

they scamming you pal. they probably ran it without a cooler or a crap cooler and the chip overheated and died. did you take pics of the cpu before hand?
since those would show the burn marks are not there.

It takes a few weeks through Paypal, they can either choose to contact you or they can do it for you, if they push it through to a claim then it takes more time, if it goes beyond that then Paypal advise them to contact you, send the item back, and send Paypal proof of postage, bit of a process, hopefully that'll put her off.

Surely if it overheated and cut out the mobo was doing its job and preventing damage to the chip?

I'd ask for the chip back, or photos of the 'damage'.

Thats my worry, can they even do this, I had no return policy, she stated it worked when the shop installed it, they installed it on a mobo that didnt fully support it, then it worked for a further 2 days fine, and even now with the comp not working after 2 minutes, it could be any component doing it.I mean Legally would she even be able to get a refund?

If it was installed on a mobo that sisnt support it then it certainly aint your fault. As a guy up there said, did you list it on Ebay with photos?

it sounds like it's entirely their fault, sounds like it was burnt out tbh.

as above ask for pictures, do you have a pic of the chip before hand? make sure it's the same chip like

Definitely sounds like the PC place's fault - plus his motherboard doesn't fully support the chip in the first place so it's not your problem he used it in a board that didn't have 100% compatibility. Plus a drop of 700PR is hardly of 'no consequence', so the place he went to really do sound like cowboys. £135 to install a CPU and some RAM, then have a look at it when it's not working properly?!

edit: and a properly installed 3200+ will not get too hot.
