Motherboard compatible with 8800GT?

no ones given a definitive yes or no to the pci 1.0-2.0 question yet but aparently they will work on 1.0. no you do not need vista to play dx10 games ,people have created patches or mods workarounds on xp.they are going to be releasing a dx10 patch soon from what ive seen as when finished for xp.

Thanks for the reply.
Regarding the DX10 mods/workarounds you refer to - are these game specific patches or a patch you apply to XP itself? Do you have any links?

Taken from the Alky Project

"The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the Microsoft DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games. We also plan to post on this blog from time to time with screenshots and videos of what's to come."

It's still very early days yet.

Even if Alky Projects manage it, do you think Microsoft will let them distribute it in any way ?
As nice as it sounds, I don't think it's possible to do it and get away with it.

No definitive info on whether it'll work with any particular mboard ... but for comparison when I bought an AGP 8X card to run on an mboard which only had a 4X AGP slot then pre-purchase googling provide large numbers of categoric statements on various websites that it could never work due to differences in signalling voltages between 4X and 8X ... however, I also found one site that explained that the AGP 8X spec while incompatible with 4X slots did have an "optional compatibility extension" that allowed it to detect if the slot was using 1.5V or 0.8V and use the relevant one so that it could work in old mboards .... no prizes for guessing that Nvidia decided to implement this optional extension!

I'd be amazed if there isn't some similar provision for backwards compatibility in PCIe 2.0

N.b. from what I've read, ATi 2400 and 2600 cards are actually already PCIe 2.0 and at are likely to clean up in the low end PC business once PCIe 2.0 mboards are available since bandwidth over PCIe 2.0 to system RAM is fast enough in that market to avoid the need for dedicated graphics RAM.

Hmm, sounds like I'm maybe best just biting the bullet and buying Vista then. Wanting to be able to use Dx10 when Crysis and COD4 come out.

I know there was problems with game compatibility and performance when running them with Vista when it first came out, is that still the case now? Would there be a performance hit compared to running the games with XP?

I see

Cheers for validating my confusion at least haha.

Yeah according to the PCI-E sig site, and various others, PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible all the way down to 1.0, so they should work in 1.0 slots, but even im waiting for someone to actually try it first so we know for sure.

So sounds like to get the most out of the card it may be best to have a PCI-e 2 motherboard. How do I know which ones are PCI-e 2 though? Don't see any mention of it in the specs of the motherboards in overclockers pages.

However fly in the oinment may be this as found by Cairnsey

Hit and miss it seems

Yeah but thats saying you'll be fine if your only gona run 1x card on that Asus board, as the primary slot is 1.1, its the secondary that it wont work in, just means you canthave 2x cards in Xfire, which i cant see being a big loss as most ppl buy one fast single card, so thats not gona affect many id have thought.

Ive got a p965 chipset board (DS4) thats Xfire compatible, yet ive got a GTS in it, don't care about Xfire, id need ATi cards to start with, so the new cards will be fine for me as ill only be running 1x, probably the new GTS, so 2nd slot don't bother me, and theres talk of ppl with only 1.0/1.1 slots not seeing much performance loss anyway seeing as those slots aint even getting saturated yet, just have to wait and see, only 6 days to go. :D

Yeah but both the slots in my board are only 1.0 so the above article saying it will work in 1.1 slots but may not work in 1.0 and you should only use it in the 1.1 slot worries.

Fine for all you people with 1.1 slot boards

Hopefully they will work in 1.0 slots as they say, we'll find out Monday, im hoping they do, as that PCI-E sig site says my boards only a 1.0, yet other ppl are saying its a 1.1, so i want to know just in case as well, its a shame we cant find out before hand, we'd know then, instead of having to wait.

I read that article as implying that the problem is because of the CrossLinx connector (x8+x8) and the difference in PCI version between the two slots, not that 1.0 won't work.
