O2 Broadband launched

it'll be interesting to see how this pans out over time. i don't trust any isp enough to sign up for a year. :p

i'm on a monthly contract now and i wouldn't have it any other way. :)

Ive had a good read on the site and it doesnt seem to say wether they unbundle your line. Im assuming they do....

Also i assume that you dont HAVE to use the ( no doubt ) useless router they send you.

If the service is to remain exactly as Be offer it, then you have to have a Be enabled exchange. The router they offer you is actually fairly decent - but you can get away with any ADSL2+ router (but you won't be offered any support for it!)

Im with zen at the moment on an upto 8meg ( usually about 5.5meg ) for £25 a month with a 20g limit. My exchange is BE enabled and i have an o2 contract phone.... this looks very tempting indeed. Im used to good pings in WoW from zen so im a bit nervous about taking the plunge however...

....still from £25 to £7.50! that takes some beating.

I'm typically getting pings of about 30ms with my O2 broadband.

The router is the same as the Be* one although you can't do things like telnet to it with the admin account supplied. It's designed with plug and play ease of use in mind for the 'normal' user rather than people that want to mess around. Of course you can use your own router though without issue.

why can't they have a clearly defined limit and provide users the facility to watch what they are doing via a webportal? that is what all isps should do. why offer an "unlimited" service with an FUP. it's a contradiction in terms surely?

i'd never expect truly unlimited broadband for this kind of money. i know the isp can't supply it and make a profit. but why do they insist on using this terminology in their advertising?

no

FUP is necessary to stop people abusing the line. and doing stuff they shouldnt. It means for example, if they find a way to hack themselves the full 24mb packages, while only paying for be value, they can just be chucked off the network etc..

FUP isnt a backdoor way of adding in a download limit. its to stop the idiots who seek to use their connection for illegal deeds. not to stop people downloading torrents.

the FUP is there to cover any possibility they might to want to end somebodys connection for doing some illegal. then they can just say "its in the FUP" and terminate them. IT covers every eventuallity and possiblity of what could happen, hence why its so hefty

but FUPs arent there to limit the unlimited package. ISPs who say "unlimited" but then limit you to "100gb/ month" or whatever, get pulled up by the advertising standards agency.

Fair Use Policies don't cover users doing illegal things - there are other clauses for that.
Fair Use is what it says on the tin - if you're using more than the ISP thinks is "fair", they can pull the plug. I've seen 900GB a month banded about, but I'd imagine it'll depend on how congested Be's links from the exchanges to the core network and from there out to the internet are.

Do they hell.

Most say Unlimited, and most of these will send threatening letters when you hit a limit they didn't mention. Tiscali's one of the worst offenders - but what can you expect for £14.99/month?

Anyone moved over to o2 yet?

I'm going to take the plunge, but would like to hear of peoples experience with them.

Also, does the pay monthly contract have to be in the ISP account holders name?

The o2 mobile contract is in my mums name, but I want to sign up under my name as I'll be using the net!

So is this O2 Broadband using LLU the same as BE* are? I entered my telephone number into BE and it said i could get upto 24mbit, then i put my details into the O2 checker and it just said upto 8mbit?!?!?!

Anyone clear this up?

O2 is Be, O2 own Be. They are both the same LLU network.

There is a possibility O2 are offering a BT IPStream product to people who can't get the LLU service - just so no one's left out. So this might be why you're seeing 8Mb, and it probably means the checker's just being thick if Be say they operate there.

Saying that, theres not a great lot of point me going for the LLU route. I can only get 2mbit on a remotely stabilised IPStream connection anyways.
