Took the dive and upgraded from my Samsung D600 to the newish Nokia 6120. I should be getting it pretty soon. Has anyone had any hands-on experience with this phone? I think it not only looks great, but the features and speed are on par with the N95 according to some reviews.

I mainly got it for the new S60 web browser that everyone has been raving about. Pairing it with a 3 PAYG sim card with the 2GB internet usage for £5 for a month seems like a good idea to me :D.

So if anyone has/had this phone, i would like to hear whats it like (good/bad).

Thanks

The N95 has a better screen, has more memory, has built in GPS, has a 5MP camera, has better quality video recording, etc etc.

It's totally different.

I see. Yea the N95 was way way too expensive for my liking. Hate having a contract too, prefer being flexible with PAYG. Also the size of it put me off, prefer smaller phones.

So has anyone actually used one of the 6120's yet? They seem fairly rare and are limited to only a few networks. Mainly 3.

EDIT: Just noticed, the screen on the N95 is the same as the 6120: 240 x 320 pixels, 40 x 53 mm, TFT, 16M colors

It's a good small symbian smartphone which I have been using more than the N95 because of its small size. If I didn't have the Xseries gold dataplan on 3 then I would be using the N95 with its wifi more often.

Instead of the standard web browser give opera mini a whirl, free but no https support, connections will be unsecure but it does strip a lot of unnecessary rubbish to reduce bandwidth usage, or theresOpera Mobile. At the moment opera mini beta 4 supports landscape mode for browsing.

One problem I found when I first got the 6120 was the dodgy placement of the soft keys below the screen. After using the N95, I was used to the softkeys being on the far edges of the phone, with the 6120 these keys are very close to the central 'navi key', You soon get used to this. Also within close proximity is the hangup button, which on series 60 phones is a shortcut back to the standby screen. Pressing this by accident can cause some applications to close altogether rather than remaining in the background.

The navi-key is a bit thin so after a lot of pressing you may end up with a notch in your thumb.

The obvious downside after coming from something like the N95 would be the shortage of storage on the phone itsefl for installing applications. Non necessary stuff can be stored on the removable micro-sd card and installed as needed.

There isn't a SIP client if you want to use Truphone with a dataplan unfortunately so I may go back to the N95 for that.

The screen may be small but that goes hand-in-hand with the small handset size and is still QVGA resolution. If you rely on the clock on a phone when it has gone into sleep mode and the screen has powered down, then you might want to give cClock a go. It displays the time in a large size as well as providing large icons for missed calles/messages and isn't overridden by the system powersaver, something than happened with other large format clocks that I tried.

Despite some small problems, it's a great little phone and with a decent data plan it becomes an essential utility. Currently I have Fring and 3's own Skype, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile trial, Shozu, Nokia Maps, Google Maps, Sky Anytime, MSN Messenger, cClock and a wake on lan utility from jibble.org installed.

If you have any questions just ask :)

[edit] with reference to the speed, it is much faster through the menus than the N95, as if the 6120 was a non-symbian phone, this was with my N95 on fresh generic firmware.

Cool, thanks for the info. Is the standard web browser they supply (s60 version not the normal wap version) any good? Ill probably install Opera on it anyway, but for the videos i have seen of it, it looks pretty good. 3D history, RSS feeds and the mini map all look pretty good to me.

It's a good phone, I got one a few weeks back.

Browser is very good, easy to navigate and use. All web pages look fine, has limited javascript and flash support. I use it instead of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini.

Phone is very quick, noticeably quicker than the wifes N95 around the menus. Screen is quite small but extremely crisp due to the decent resolution and smaller size, looks sharper than the N95 imo.

It doesnt have all the features that the N95 has but it's a quarter the price and a lot smaller, It's the smallest smart phone out and also one of the quickest. Camera isnt great, especially in poorly lit places, video wise it's pretty good with it's 320x240 resolution.

Any program that runs on the N95 should work on the 6120 too.

For a phone you can already buy from Ebay for as little as £65! I think it's an instant winner.

£65?! I got mine yesterday for £72 including p&p, but it was the phone on its own. Already have the usb cable. Just need the charger and sim. I couldn't find it anywhere else cheaper than that. But still, its a good price for a smartphone. I was going to get the N80, but i heard some bad reports of it, so i opted for something newer and quicker.

To be honest I haven't used all of the features of the inbuilt browser so am unfamiliar with the mini map but the RSS feature seems to work well as does the 3D history, allowing you to choose which page to load up rather than having to load up a page only to find out its the wrong one. There is also the toolbar which you have probably seen, I only found this last week. It can be invoked by holding the main key down on an empty part of the screen and provides the following: history list directly from the toolbar, some zoomed out version of the page to allow quick scrolling to another part of the page, reload page and find.

[edit] I didnt give a reason as to why I have the Opera trial installed, you can download files using it which the standard browser won't do :)

I added everyone selling for a few week period onto my favs, saw them go for anywhere between £65 to £95 new and fully boxed. I didnt want a 'Three' branded phone as they're locked and not easily unlocked yet, so waited for a T-Mobile one to pop up which is now unbranded software wise :) but it cost a little more. Most went for about £80-90 but I remember atleast 2 that went for as little as £65 (One even had a Bluetooth headset! but I missed out on that one by £1 :( )

I dont think you'll be disappointed, it has a lot of features.

Yea its unlucky missing those cheap ones. Today i seen "Buy It Now" 6120's for around £85 with everything and completely new. One even had a 512mb microSD card too. Pity since i bought mine last night at around 11.50pm, should have waited :D. But in total its cost me £77.88 for the phone, charger and sim card. Not bad at all imo. Never been with 3 before, only joined them for the 2Gb internet for £5 for a month. Cheapest i can find for that amount of data usage. My brother is with them on contract and he seems happy enough with them :P

It's an excellent phone! I was all set for it, but i'm going to pony up a little more money and get the Nokia E51 which is basically the same as this phone (smaller again technically volume-wise) but has wi-fi, has stainless steel instead of the plastic (I wasn't a fan of the "feel" of the phone). Some updated features like the easy call muting button and button access to bluetooth, as well as the updated symbian OS (is it 9.2 S60 3.2 or something?).

If i wasn't getting the E51 i'd have this now, and as said they're a bargain on ebay!

Oh and the screen is just as good as the N95's easily, it's smaller yes, but then again the phone is tiny in comparison and lighter.

5mp camera of the N95 is ok, but the first edition GPS doesn't really do it for me, maybe when they get faster and more reliable... Not to mention the battery life i've heard it FAR better than the N95 :)
