Debit cards, why do so few places accept them?

As per title, why do 99% of all online shops demand a credit card like Visa or Mastercard and why don't they accept debit cards like Maestro?
For me this is a huge annoyance as I can't get a credit card yet due to my age, why do only a handfull of sites accept Maestro?
 
um, almost all stores i use accept debit cards. i cant think of one that doesnt....

where are you trying to shop?? is it pron??
 
Unless you're buying something that requires proof of age you can use a debit card... so you're either trying to buy porn, guns or alcohol :p
 
The only places i can think of that wont accept maestro is pron and yank sites, even alcohol and cigars I've found can be bought on most sites with a debit card
 
Any non UK site, the UK sites indeed accept Maestro more often, but all normall dutch shops don't :(.
No normall stuff: Pc parts, electronics, games, etc...
 
Its available worldwide... I dont see why these places dont accept them..

maybe its just one of those things? lifes little challenges? :(
 
I’ve never had any problem using a maestro card anywhere online.

Maestro is the new name for Switch (the most common debit card), are you getting confused with Solo or something? I also have a Mastercard so I don’t have a Maestro because of bad credit.

I've never had a problem using my solo card anywhere online.

I was under the impression solo is the least widely recognised too?
 
We don't have solo here.

Paypal also seems to only accept CC's.
EDIT:
I also renember IO wanted to buy some skype money, but they also didn't include maestro.
