Getting annoyed at myself - ordering today!

if u want my advice wait till the new 9800s come out then buy a cheap gtx or gts

Hmmmm but how long is that going to be? Hydrid SLI single card jobby is due in Feb so maybe Spring (6 months) for the 9800 cards to arrive.

Long time to wait before purchasing your pc :p

And for a stand in now you probably won't do much better than a 8800GT

Depends on what cards come out next year really. Don't forget pci2.0 boards can give the gfx card 300w through the slots as opposed to just 75w (I think) with the 1.1 slots so at least for now it will stop you having to bother with addtional power cables to the new gen cards.

say some top end all singing all dancing card comes out which is 4-5 times quicker than an Ultra, 1Gb plus memory etc. You might start and need the bandwidth through the 2.0 board.

Also why not buy the lastest if you are in the market? I'm not saying somebody should swap boards now but if I was buying one today I would get a 2.0 pci express board unless the price difference was huge (is it?????)

I don't really see the additional power a real issue.

Why do you think you need the additional bandwidth on the Bus? With more local memory on the graphics card it becomes even less of an issue. The only time you will need the bandwidth is if you need to transfer information between 2 devices. eg SLI. A single card once loaded up will work locally.

Its all a bit of a conn IMHO

Make sure you get the Gigabyte 8800GT. You get Neverwinter Nights 2 with it. :)

And if you do have one, can you try it on a 1.0a board and tell us if it works please?

Desperate to find out if my DFI Expert will run one

Wait for the 8800GT. I bought a 2900Pro two weeks ago and I am now kicking myself as it looks like the GT will hold its own/beat the 2900XT :(

I have to say as much as it pains me that the card looks very nice I really like the slim look.

Ah yes, there's the new HD3850? from ATI out on the 15th of next month too. It might be worth waiting for an extra couple of weeks to see what this has to offer.

Will offer nothing, the 3800's are already out, and have been since May, but under the name of 2900's, ATi have just cut their bus to 256bit from 512, shrunk the die, and changed the name so ppl wont think they are the same poor 2900's again and so buy em, as they'll think they nothing to do with the 2900's, when in reality they the same cards again, so id wait till Monday and get the GT. :D

How do you know they are just a die shrink?

Rumors suggest otherwise.

I don't know one way or another but I would be very suprised its just a die shrink.

Isn't that almost the same as the GT, cut bus, shrunk the die in fact everything except change the name???

And everybody is raving about the performance of the new GT which doesn't seem affected by the bus cut and we get loads of extra performance from the increase in stock core and potential overclocking headroom? So logic dictates that the 3800's will have the same performance boost over the 2900's so I think you are been unfair.

Spot on, Loadsa seems to always equate performance to bus width :p

I think the only thing we can say for sure is the ATI cards will Use less power, for performance comparisons we need to wait a week or so...I really can not see a "higher" numbered part not being faster than a "lower" numbered item :D
