Just wondering if MS have started to work on the new Xbox, I presume it will get 2009-2010 release, the 360 has done well but its reliability issue have let it down.

I doubt there will ever be one. This gen cost them too much money. They will go through the motions to make sure they get as much back as possible then pull the plug on the console market.

They are never going to even break even on what they have spent over two generations. Its become a pointless excercise.

You really think that?

So er you a Sony fan? Hope not because at this rate and in light of your revelations, Sony will do the same leaving the market devoid of consoles in 3 years time.

You know having a presence in the console market is great brand marketing for them. Kids play on microsoft consoles, they use microsoft computer software and so on. You can't buy a market presence like that...oh wait they have and will continue to do so.

he has got a point though MS has lost billions to the xbox brand and continue to do so, nintendo and sony both made money from the past decade, as much as the ps3 is costing sony the ps2 is still making a shedload.

it was mentioned that if they couldn't beat Sony this time with the 360 at the price offered, the SKU's available and the games that that will be available that then they wouldn't know what to do. I personally think they have improved greatly software and marketing wise but have seriously messed up on the hardware side of things and that they know this and will make one more console after the 360 with everything taken on board that they have had problems with in the past.

lol. You think they didn't do this on purpose? They're deliberately selling it far cheaper and making a loss to penetrate the market and get ahead of competitors. So far it has worked quite well.

I would have though all 3 console manufactures are working on new consoles to some degree, from testing new technology to finding out exactly what the consumer wants. Nintendo took a risk with the DS and the Wii by thinking about the non gamer as well, and at present it seems to have paid off, whether this will be the same edict the rest will use i dont know.

It was reported last month that Sony had cut back it's development budget and with other financial information analysts said the PS3 may be Sony's last..
All conjecture of course, and that's the thing, it's easy to 'make' up scenario's in which any of the big 3 would 'quit'..
End of the day MS are pulling in plenty of $ in games sales, and if this continues it makes a good business case for the next gen.

Both Sony and Microsofts gaming divisions are losing them money, but with video games now a multi billion dollar industry, I cant see Microsoft turning their back on it.

I thought Jay had confirmed a few months ago that they were working on a new console. Knowing Microsoft they will be, hell they're wrapping up a Beta for Windows 7 and Vista hasn't been officially out a year yet.

I can't see that happening. Microsoft have got the money to spare anyway and as someone already mentioned, it is another market to penetrate and get the Microsoft name through to more people.

Bill Gates strikes me as the kind of person that will push a technology as far as it can go even if it means him losing money. He is my hero.

Sony are losing more than MS at the moment though. The latest Sony financial report: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/07q2_sony.pdf saw Sony's gaming division down $841M for just the last quarter!! MS results are in later today and should see them post a profit; will be interesting.

MS have some 60+ billion dollars sat in cash so in perspective $6b to get not only a foothold in the console market but become the market leader for internet movie downloads with a product that's outselling the nearest competition and forecast to start making profit this quarter isn't much. They've succeeded in getting a box running MS software sat in lounge of 12m homes and counting. There is no way MS are pulling out anytime soon.

I thought MS were on course to make their first profit from their gaming division this quarter, they've been investing in the hope that software sales will make them money, which seems to be the right approach.

MS have a long term plan which is only halfway through so i'd be amazed if they abandoned the market while they are in the best position they've ever been.

ill just echo what everyone has said really. nintendo, ms and sony will all be working on new ideas im sure.

really cant see ms pulling out of the gaming market seeing as their xbox console is so big in the US/Europe.

One of Microsofts mains reasons for the Xbox range is to stop Sony having dominance of an under set media capable box of some description.

They are quite happy to lose lots of dollars to stop Sony having the monopoly on media type devices as they see this as where Microsoft should be.

I really do hope they are working on a new console for the next generation, as now I couldnt imagine a console lineup without an xbox in it. The competition between the 3 current consoles is fantastic and can only be a good thing for the industry.

Imagine if they had just quit when the first xbox didnt really do as well as they would have hoped, we would be missing out on a lot of things that have changed the way games are played, achievements and a well done live system for example.
