Are Microsoft working on the Xbox 3 ?

I think they've made enough inroads with the 360 to warrant releasing another console. Their aim with this generation was not necessarily to become market leader, but to at least make advances on the two market leaders, which I believe they've done.

Their product design section will most definately be working on it at the very least.

Yeah these companies are always working on their "next big thing", whether it's only a crude doodle on a company bar beer mat or just a predicted lifespan for the 360 you can bet their paying someone to be thinking about their next console!

Wether it happens or not we'll see, they've sure built up a great marketing tool with Live to warrant something that uses it in the future though.

I doubt there will ever be one. This gen cost them too much money. They will go through the motions to make sure they get as much back as possible then pull the plug on the console market.

They are never going to even break even on what they have spent over two generations. Its become a pointless excercise.

In business sometime you have to invest into a black hole. This is because the cost of not investing is greater than the cost of the investment (ie loss of business to rivals, or allowing rivals to move into your key market).

Good grief, the levels of Microsoft sycophancy in this thread is making me sick.

The simple fact is that Microsoft has lost billions with it's Xbox project - remember all the 360 repairs cost them a fair bit as well, and now the shareholders are starting to ask questions like "is it really worth it?". Microsoft's core competency has always been software whether it be Windows or Office applications - not hardware/games consoles. I'm sure MS are working on an Xbox 3, because that's the way high technology industries work, whether it actually gets released is another matter that I'm sure is under discussion.

What i WOULD like to see is SEGA getting into the act again with a new console. Since they stopped SEGA games have become a joke. While they had a console they made much more of an effort on gameplay and thier games were the best out there.

I would dearly love to see an updated Daytona USA or a proper Sonic game (their hasn;t been one of those since they left 2D behind.)

Sonic Rivals was crap. no skill what so ever! Mario on the DS was perfect, using 3D on a 2D template, why can't sega do the same for sonic????

Mmmkay.

So how exactly is that trying to win favour through flattery and servility?

If Bill Gates was reading it maybe he would be very flattered and take kindly to the hero remark, then take ScarySquirrel to be his apprentice? ;)

Surely what he has said is true, he will keep on throwing money at the console industry in the hope that one day it will pay off, he has used plenty and if I am correct not made a profit from it. Yet still it continues, maybe in the future they will have a joint venture to spread cost/losses, as there is already talk of Toshiba helping with development of a HD-DVD console.

Played sonic rush?

Microsoft have put too much cash into this now to pull out. They simply wont do it unless the main rivals are SO MUCH further ahead that its pointless. As of right now this isnt the case. They did say that they didnt expect to start making good profits untill the 3rd console was underway.

Sony it could be argued have lost as much if not more money ( in relation to the percentages ) with the PS3 and to be honest considering the overall shape of "sony" the corporation its far more likey that they will drop out first. Money comes from software sales and there simply isnt enough ps3 games being sold to make huge profits ( yet ). I suppose what happens in the next year will throw it one way or the other for sony. For sony the problem seems to be the fact that many gamers see the ps3 as too expensive and not enough games. While the 360 is seen as cheaper ( not by much ) but has far more games.

This christmas sales season will be a bit of a crunch for both companies i think..

Nintendo are in good shape financially and will most likely do another console that will in all likelyhood be in a similar vein to the Wii ( more cheap and cheerful then the others ) and will make good profits from it.

Sega saw that hardware was costing them dear and decided to make games for others and its paying off for them. Nintendo may decide to do this at some point in the future, though it would be really going against the grain for them.

For the record i am neither a sony or a microsoft fan and i own no console other then a saturn and a a dreamcast. I only have time now to play 1 game ( WoW ) so none of the consoles interest me much at all. I am speaking as someone who sees the market from the ouside with no particular "favorite" to put my vote behind.

My personal prediction is one more console from each of them main players and then one of them will drop out and either make/publish games, or drop out of the games market all together ( most unlikely ).

A while back on a podcast a MS rep said they were looking at 2011 for the next console but designing something so complex as a new games console who knows when it will be out.

Sonic rush was decent-ish I thought.

Sonic adventure was good at the time too I thought, after that game I personally thought the 3d games turned to muck (seems I was the only one in the world who liked SA1 and hated SA2)

Sega have just turned Sonic into a big cash in, not that he wasn't for them before, but at least he had good games to back it up in the past, I can't believe Sonic is so popular among kids today, I mean the games are just so terrible, must be that blasted cartoon they're all watching.

Anyways, would love to see another Sega console, Dreamcast = some of my fondest gaming memories.

I think there will be another console, But I also think people are right, In saying things have been absolutely appalling this time around. Reliability wise anyways. It must be costing MS a fortune, In repairs, replacements, and Revisions. Hope things go better in the next Gen :P

Are they? Where do you get that from?

Their shareholders look at the overall picture, see profits profits profits, they are happy I would imagine.

MS are not making a profit yet, but they soon will be at this rate.

No they don't. Shareholders often use analysts who work out if a company is making as much profit as it can. Microsoft inc might be making lots of profit that has kept their shareholders relatively happy, but now people are beginning to ask how much their dividends would have been if MS got rid of their xbox division. Fair question.

Any evidence of the MS shareholders being unhappy? Where are they asking about?

Are you kidding me, it takes like a quater of the final price to make a console... They make billions from consoles, not to mention the revenue they recieve from sponserships and advertising contracts. There are millions of kids alone who would want one, and then theres teenagers and then us adults, the market is so large for consoles its unreal.

You cant have a world without consoles nowadays, its the biggest craze, when the ps3 was released people in japan and america actually stabbed and shot each other for one!!

The news coverage on the systems was un real, bloody hell HALO3 was all over the news for a week!

You really do not know what your talking about dude.

You really think that?

The dude dosnt have a clue.

It was reported last month that Sony had cut back it's development budget and with other financial information analysts said the PS3 may be Sony's last..

Theres always someone out there whos going to say something like that, you have people predicting things all the time, damn we have been waiting for a house crash for 5 years, interest rates are apparantly going to soar above expectations, its all rubbish, just wait and see, you cant predict anything with these companies.

And to answer the 1st question, they will have started the project soon after the 1st quater of revenue came in from the Xbox, same as the PS3 have done, there now on there way to making a PS4...

enough to overturn the 3 billion that ms had to drop into 360 repairs/refurbs? not too mention that after years in the gaming industry they have only just started to get into the black.
