Hey all, my girlfriend bought herself a '99 MGF the other week and now has a nice sized nail lodged in the back left wheel, looks well lodged in, and about 1/3 of the way in from the outside wall and not sure whats best to do, the tyres have nice grip left on them, but the rear's do not match eachother, so we're thinking it might be a good time to get some new rear tyres fitted on both sides, what would be recommended as good 15/50/205 tyres, have heard Toyo do some good ones?

What's the white guzz on the head?

Does the tyre leak? Would it be cheaper to get it plugged/patched than cough out for a pair of new tyres?

As long as you have a spare tyre, pull the nail out, I have had half a nail go in before and it caused no real problem. But you do have the risk the tyre will just empty.

Otherwise go to your local independent tyre guy and he will tell you if its safe to put a rubber plug in it or not. They are safe if done properly, but plenty of people don't like them.

Otherwise if you want to spend the money change the tyres.

What ever you do, check the air pressure daily until you get it fixed.

That's a pretty sizeable lump, you sure that's a nail??

A repair (if possible) will cost about £15 tops, that said a 205/50/R15 shouldn't cost the earth either - I would have thought well below £50 for a half decent make.

yep, its a nail, just with awhite plastice base, think a nail with a plastic yellow lump on one end, you can see the nail in pic 1 at the top end of the plastic part.

Main reason i'm hinking about new tyres, is that its going to the garage for some work on saturday whilst we're away, so figured 2 tyres on top of it at one time may as well be done, as she does have a tendancy to worry.

What 15x50x205's would be recommendable if we did go for a new set? :)

Ah I see it now.

I can recommend the Toyos, I've got them in 17" on the front of mine. Loads of grip, and seem to be wearing well - just a little expensive tbh. Eagles are supposed to be good, Cooper Avons too. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a more specific pointer.

That will repair no problem as long as it hasn't been run to far, to flat. Hold onto your cash for new tyres a little longer.

right i too have an mgf i run I Toyo T1R's with F1 rears, they work very well together, however just get it repaired like mentioned, as these tyres are going to set you/girlfreind back a bit, as they are not cheap tyres.

That looks perfectly repairable. Unless you are unhappy with the performance of the tyres then get it fixed and use it. If the fronts are a better brand and matched then consider swapping the tyres from front to back when you get it repaired.

I seem to remember there be something about the MGF only being able to take specific tyres otherwise the handling is upset - properly.

Seek advice on the MG Owners club before you buy anything.
