8800 GT - First Review

the card itself? or the order ?

With 112 stream processors and 65nm with 512MB ram instead of 320 it cannot be be worse than the 8800GTS I have now, it can only be better so well worth the £40 upgrade :p

But now I'm wondering how good the new 640MB one will be too!

640mb will be like slightly faster than a GTX I think or on par.

I've found the Club3D version 512MB 8800GT for £134 inc VAT, expected stock date is 29th of this month, will be placing my order on payday tomorrow :)

So selling my GTS 320 for £100 = £40 for new card = awesome upgrade!

If you sell your card now you'll get more than £100 for it. Maybe £150 if your lucky ;)

Mines now at £150 on the bay (less informed people) so my equatione will be £150-£140 = I'm paid £10 to swap my card :D

Personally I'd just buy one on Monday from ocuk You aren't going to get your card any quicker cause all cards will dispatch on Monday and secondly a lot of other sites with pre-order prices sometimes change them on the day of items in stock so you may end up paying more than ocuk anyway.

Trust ocuk :)

I've actually promised my mate £100 and he can have my card, ah it's only a £40 upgrade so I guess it's worth it :p

I guess this is true, in fact a local 'tech shop also popular online should have stock too and they are 7 miles away from me!

It has a 256 bit memory bus, but the 384 of the GTS.

Actually, the GTS has a 320-bit bus, the GTX has a 384-bit bus. And the 8800 GT has faster memory, 1800Mhz vs. 1600Mhz. The end result is a bandwidth difference of 9GB/s, not exactly a performance crusher.

Yea but think that you could easilly get most GTS's to 2000Mhz, how high can the memory of the GT go to?

Well, supposedly the 8800 GT's memory is actually rated for 2000 Mhz*, they're using some Qimonda memory and downclocking it, dunno why, possibly because of the single slot cooler, so on any dual slot cooler versions chances are you'll be able to take the memory to a bit over 2000?

Hee hee, speculation is fun. Besides, the 8800 GT is on a smaller core, its core clock can probably go way higher than the 8800 GTS's.

*see hyb18h512321BF-10 for memory, matched against the picture in that other link.

WTF!?!? Why does GPU-Z say it has 7ROP's?

ROFL I just noticed that. They were probably using an out of date version of GPU-Z at the time they made that article 'cause it also reckons it has a 0-bit memory bus.

ShackNews: Do you have any insight to how well the upcoming range of cards will support Crysis, not just on the high end but lower down the ladder as well?

Cevat Yerli: Very, very well. Stay tuned for more on this. In mid November you will see the new NVidia cards. They are a blast for Crysis and really, really very good deals.

xD

Looks like Crytek had advanced optimisation on these new cards if true!

I know where you mean!

I want an 8800GT, but I also want one without a screaming fan that sounds as though a herd of goats is being sacrificed. This 7600GT is a screamer, and the photos I've seen of 8800GT so far look like the goat.
