my old mans c2d is idling at 64o...which was reduced from 86(!) o after i realised the intel stock hsf was not mounted correctly. now these intel hsf's are a right b*****d to clip on properly but i am pretty sure it is there now. it is solid on the mobo so cant go in any further...new lot of thermal paste applied and although a drop of 20 degrees is noted it is still way too hot. i wonder if a new cooler is gonna fix the problem but surely a stock hsf should still be working more efficiently?!

very confused

Did you apply the bare minimum of thermal paste?

And which chip is it? Also use CoreTemp to read temps.

used a good smother of thermal paste, more than the usual pea sized amount. its a C2D E6320...i shall give coretemp a go although the last time i used it before reseating the hsf is said "126(?)" which i thought must have been an error

well usually i would but i thought desperate times and all that...!
now i didnt smother the thing, far from it...can too much thermal paste lead to higher temps?

too much paste, your aiming for like a grain of rice size blob... no more really...

^^^

Too much paste will make the cpu run hotter.. thermal paste isn't actually very good at conducting heat, it's only to be used to fill in any space that would occur between the cpu and the heatsink. In an ideal worl, both the cpu and heatsink would be 100% flat, and thus be no space, removing the need for thermal compund, but alas, you would have to use an exceedingly good machine to lap them both 100% flat.

Grain of rice is WAY too much imo anyway, you dont need it to cover the whole of the heatspreader. Just get just a smidgen on the centre of the CPU and plant the HSF/Block on top. Screw down and leave it. :)

i usually use a rice grain sided amount, and spread it evenly with a credit card or something. usually works fine for me.

well i'll be buggered what's wrong with it...can only assume it is a dodgy hsf. arctic freezer pro here i come. just ordered a freezer 64 as well
