Why would anyone pronounce Spee anyway?

When there are 2 vowels one after the other, the first one get pronounced. There are exceptions but this isn't one of them.

I read Spie as it "The secret agent spied ..... so and so...."

Well spie is the leader of ocuk, think of another great dictator ..... Hitler springs to mind, in German it would be pronounced spee because the e is after the i

thinking about it, my 3 year german education has actually screwed the way i pronounce many words when i see them :rolleyes:

As spied. But that's not the issue since his name isn't Spied. It is Spie.

I am not arguing how it is pronounced as he has said himself it is not spee. But my argument is a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why I, and others, may pronounce it spee.

I know it's Spy, but I've always said Spee, because I think Spy sounds naff.
