I made mine yesterday and the mincemeat for the mince pies and the puddings are currently steaming and the mincement is in the oven.

It smells all christmassy now :D I don't make Christmas cake as no one really likes it but I'm sure some people are making theirs or have already made theirs by now.

Do you make your own or buy them? I think the homemade ones are worth the effort, the mince took about an hour to get ready then stand overnight and the same for the puddings.

Nah, ours is still in the shop :)

We sometimes make our own/used to, but a nice irish stout-infused one from some shop is easier. It depends on how many we're catering for. If we need a big one we'll make it ourselves.

Mince pies, on the other hand are NEVER bought. Always homemade. The pastry at least, if not the mincemeat too.

Slightly OT - am I the only one who as a child thought that mincemeat was just meat, e.g. beef, that had just been minced?
Minced as in put through a machine that chopped it all up and spat it out, as opposed to having been frolicked on by prancing homosexuals.

I don't like christmas pudding :( which makes me sad as I always feel like I'm missing out.

I usually get a tub of Ben and Gerrys for Christmas day.....Mmmm

many years ago it was infact beef which had been minced then dried fruit was added and beef suet plus sugar which sounds disgusting.

I don't make my own mincemeat but always my own cake during this half term then i pour brandy over it every week until christmas and it tastes great even if i do say so myself! perhaps i'll try mincemeat this year?

Give it a go, made about this tme of year gives it time to mature a bit as well. I use the delia smith recipe and the same for the puddings. I use vegetable suet as I'm a vegetarian. She says to buy whole candied peel and chop it finely yourself but I didn't bother this year, just bought the ready choped ones as that took me at least 30 minutes alone last year!

I never used to like puddings but after trying this one last year I found I now love them :D

Made the Christmas cake last weekend, don't bother making a Christmas pudding as only me and my dad eat it. Mince pies will be made in a few weeks time :)

The recipe is on the delia smith website :)

I'll leave mine until a couple of days before Christmas now probably, the pastry anyway, but the mince will be all done in about an hour. Puddings are still steaming away and should be ready by about 4.30, takes 8 hours to steam  I make 2 small ones using the delia recipe, even if just for 2 I'd make a small one, just half the quantities as they really are delicious.

Ooh thanks for the heads up Jodie, I'll need to make mine soon.

I'll also make my christmas cake at the same time, and soak it in a litre of brandy ;).

Edit: I really need to get my sister's mother-in-law's recipe. She makes it on the hob - in some really strange French way - and according to my sister it's the best cake she's ever tasted. Must be really hard to do, a "live" cake making if you will.

my gran used to make them each year with a HUGE batch of mince pies. sadly we have acquired a taste for the ASDA variety christmas puddings, so my gran only makes mince pies now, cant complain though, love 'em. :)

My mum, she usually does them the year before and puts em in the freezer, she is mad I tell thee MAD.

She certainly is. They should be stored on a cool dry shelf, not bloody frozen.

Mine has been curing since before last Christmas, it'll be a good 18 months old when we eat it.
