I had a letter through the post 2 weeks ago from British Gas stating that i owe 2 Quaters of Electricity @ £500ish. I promptly called them and asked why on earth i was getting a bill for such a high amount when i pay via direct debit. The guy replied "Oh dont worry about it mate it must be a typing error your account shows £40 and you have a Direct Debit in place" I left the call feeling a little dubious but otherwise satisfied there was no problem.

Today i get a further letter from british Gas stating i need to pay £250 without fail to prevent further action! This came with a nice red background and big bold type, so i promptly called them again. This time I was told that i do infact owe them £500 and that they need at least £250 to prevent a defult going on my credit file! They told me that I cancelled my direct debit back in june and havnt made a payment since! Now i most certainly did not cancel my direct debit, infact as i was using slightly more than the fixed amount they were taking via direct debit i called them and increased it to cover the deficit! They flat out ignored what i said and continually blamed me for cancelling my direct debit. My argument to them was "Why would i increase the payment amount and 2 weeks later cancel the direct debit? You have made a mistake not me so how can you justify demanding I pay you £x when you should be doing everything in your power to help me make the payments @ a realistic amount?" I felt this was falling on deaf ears so i requested to talk to a manager.

She was mildly more helpful but still insisted that i either called them or sent them a letter to cancel the Direct Debit. After all this arguing the only option I have is to pay them no less than £200 via a debit card and have a further £75 a month come out of my bank account! I am going to struggle to pay my bills now because of their **** up.

Just thought i'de share my morning with you folks. Good day to you all :)

One Cheesed off Smitho3!

Did you not notice that no money was being taken for months and months? surely when you check your bank statements and do your end of month finances you should have seen that no money was going out to pay the gas.

Thing is with DD its almost impossible to prove you didnt cancel it... even if you did have proff that you didint they probably wouldnt even care anyway. I hate these big companies and their arrogant attitudes to customer service.

Thing is I pay X amount into a seperate account and have all my bills come out of there. I make sure that i put in more than enough to pay my bills so I am always ahead. When the account gets to a certain level I buy something nice that I want. So I am always going to have a bit extra going into this account so guess I didnt notice exactly how much it was (As I have been using the account a lot recently as I have been on holiday and have had to buy birfday gifts etc...)

I guess what I need to do now is keep a closer eye on my finances, I tried to make it as simple as possible but obviously when companies royally foul up like this it would have paid to be a little more diligent.

Was on watchdog again the other night - they have had 4x more complaints about them this year than anyone else.

Think they said it was 80,000 complaints, not good

They even broke into someones house while they were on holiday to change the meter.

And took over £2000 from one womans account without billing her - and she wasnt even a customer.

that's the problem by paying them via dd - they always wanted loads more from me than i was using so they end up owing me cash?? £180 when i moved out of my last place so i pay online now - easier. they'll send you an email when the bill is due and i settle it then.

I have just made a complaint with EnergyWatch. Hopefully they will kick BG into sorting a more fair and logical way of sorting out this problem!

That's usually a pretty good way of getting a result.

For those who wanted to see an idea of just how poor BG are, check this page from the Energywatch website:
http://www.energywatch.org.uk/help_and_advice/supplier_performance/index.asp

That's not just number of complaints per company, that's complaint levels per 100k consumers......so imagine how bad that really is when you realise that BG has the biggest share of the market too

This has just happened to me, luckily i noticed tonight that my last two Gas payments to British Gas haven't been taken. I will be phoning them at 08:00 to find out why. Will be interesting if they accuse me of cancelling it.

 and to think I've just switched to em this weekend!

I had a letter from npower last week to say they cannot produce a statement at this time due to some error.

I checked my account online at it's currently over £900 in credit so my DD's are going through ok.

Anyone that isn't paying enough attention to their bank account statements to realise that a DD payment hasn't gone is pretty damned stupid if you ask me (directed at the OP, since teulk noticed)

ive only ever used BG at the chippy and i used to phone up every month with the readings and they took the exact amount owed.

all was well and good until i tried to leave and the all the made up bull came from them about owing thousands etc etc.

would not use again even if they were cheapest.

HA! BG being the cheapest? Not sure if that's true in commercial but household, BG was a pain. Despite giving regular readings, they flat out refused to reduce my DD because apparently during the winter, with my highest reading, come summer, I'll need it? - Had to laugh at the guy over the phone. Promply left them with £300 back in my pocket after 28 days in March, paying £95 a month, dual fuel in an eco 2 up 2 down house. Crazy!
