Long story short:

Picked up ITR, cambelt snapped on the way home.

To say I'm gutted is an understatement :(

To be fair to Si, there was no way he could have possibly known, and he's being great about it.

Excuse me whilst I go away and drink some more................

Yep, interference as far as I know. It happened on the M5 near tewkesbury, so I had it recovered to Powerstation as they were so close. Not sure what's happening with it yet, we are looking at a couple of options.

What options do you have then, or will it be a case of waiting to see what is bent and what isn't? When you say Si is being great about it, does that mean he is helping you foot the bill/similar?

Anyway, at least it made it to RR7 ;)

(Sorry, jokes probably aren't what you want right now)

:(
its always a bum when you buy a car from a mate
both parties feel like absolute crap if something goes wrong..

I hope this is sorted mate, to both your satisfaction.

Sorry to hear about the Cam Belt hope all is well

I am 90% sure the DOHC series are non interference a couple of owners on accordr.org have had cam belts snap - a new cam and balancer belt later and all is well (1 owner was well into VTEC when belt let go)

My old ATR now owned by another member his belts completely shredded and guess what no damage

keep your head up until you get the dreaded bad news (maybe the car will be ok)

I had my belts done at 98k on my 2nd ATR just to be safe as was not sure if previous owner had done them at said 70k

Gutting :(
Hopefully what IPBA said is correct and you'll be on your way again with a couple of new belts.

Absolutely gutted for you mate, hate to say it but im pretty sure the B series engines are interference, however, have a look at nominous says in this thread on HR:

Usually (from what I've seen several times), interference in vtec, non-interference out of vtec.

B20VTEC conversion really depends on the build as to it being yes or no.

So if this is true, it depends on how it was built and how you were driving at the time it went (can pretty much guess that one).

Really do have my fingers crossed for you mate - all the best.

I wasn't actually giving it serious beans at the time, the wife was in-toe in the Estima and I was doing a steady 65-70 MPH, I was at around 4-5k rpm.

It didn't actually make a noise either, it just started miss-firing, then lost power, so I backed right off the gas and coasted over to the hard-shoulder and the engine just cut-out. No real drama to be honest, no noises or anything.

I opened the bonnet, and felt the cambelt was slack (there is no cam-pully cover).

Then might be a good idea to source one and get it fitted when the belt is replaced!

Hmm, hang on a minute...you said cam belt was just slack? Not shredded or visibly broken?

My thoughts exactly, perhaps a foreign object got in there.

EDIT: Yes, just slack. I presumed it to be broken and just kind of 'sitting' there. What are you thinking? Tentioner?

With no cam belt cover, a snapped belt would normally be fairly easy to spot, though it could have simply shredded some teeth off without actually snapping. Foreign objects getting trapped between belt and pulleys could also make it skip a few teeth without necessarily snapping it.

Being optimistic the symptoms you mention could potentially be caused by far less destructive issues. The distributors/coils are a weak point on the B series engines, and can fail without warning. Could be fuel related as well.

Just by carefully turning the engine over by hand using a socket on the crank pulley, you will be able to see if the cams are still moving, and if so whether the timing marks are still aligned. If they are, then the problem lies elsewhere.
