hi 1st post here and im desperate ( been before never regged lol)

i boiught a mobo from ebay :S and when i installed it it wouldnt boot

just a flash from the rj45 light..

anyways the manual says i need a power supply with a -5v supply
i have a ocz silent xstream 600w psu so which is 2 months old so expected this to have it...
turns out it hasnt
there is not cable on the -5v slot on the main 20 pin slot ( 20+4 btw)
the guy i bought it from said he was using a tagan 480w and it run fine

but i want a psu that can handle sli when i decide to get a 2nd g card(mobo is sli)

strangely all the models the msi site recommends are 300-400w models but it recommends a 450w at least..

anyone recommend a model i can buy that will work. i went to pc world in vain lol and their best model a jeantech 700w doesnt have it and ******s 700w version x power i think, doesnt have it either

need help as i dont want to take pc apart again to fit old parts
. im on my daughters pc atm and its not going down too good

Hi there.

I think you'll find that the PSU should be fine. It sounds like the problem is either that something is broken or not set up correctly, Can you post the specs and we'll ave a look

ocz silent xstream 600w
msi k8n diamond motherboard sli (old one was biostar nf4st-a9, this works lol)
4 x 512mb twinx corsair pc3200 c2pt(platinum tried 1 on its own. no joy
1 x 250gig seagate sata
1 x 300gig maxtor sata
1 x 120gig eide maxtor

if any of my parts had died would i be right in thinking it would at least boot to post or beep a error code?

thanks for reply
i took the cmos battery off for 10 mins to clear in case something from that was the cause,, vain attempt lol

What processor and graphics are you running??

A few things to try, firstly, you could jump start it with a screwdrivger, it might simply be a broken in incorrectly attached power button. If that doesnt work try loading it with the bare minimum connected. 1 stick of ram, processor, cooler and graphics, no drives etc and see if there is any luck there. Another thing to try is take it out of the vase and set it down on a flat surface on top of an insulator ( the sheet of foam thatcomes in most motherboard packahging is great) and try and run it then, just to see if it is shorting on the case somehow

4200 x2 amd ( worked on old board)
and nvidia 8600gts worked as well
ill try the things u say i did wonder if it was a chance of shorting

You might find you need to flash the bios on that board before it'll run a dual core CPU. The K8N diamond was released before the althlon X2 came out, so if the guy before you had it a while and didnt update it could be running an early bios. Although maybe someone can confirm cos I'm not too sure, I thought it'd boot, but only use one core if the bios was too old.

Try the other stuff first, but thats a possibility

the -5v rail hasnt being used in years... its only used for ISA cards

Not strictly true, MSI still use them or at least they did until recently. Not the slightest clue why though, everyone else seems to get by without it.

I would have suggested just buying another Tagan PSU but when I checked earlier their 700w PSU doesn't have a -5v anymore it seems or rather they don't list it. The best solution is probably just to check every PSU manufacturer you can think of and see what their specifications say.

ok thanks for all ya help

its started off with the manual saying it needed a -5v rail

k i got it going out in open then it stopped when fitted in case,
thought hmm shorting...nope
i fitted rubber washers to it. lol had none so made some from a puncture repair kit.;D

still no..
and the only thing i can presume is...when i slotted the +4 pins next top the 20 is the buggar slid in no problems.. shen i examined it was the wrong way round.. but it damn fitted didnt they say they were fool proof.. so my big ass mistake
also until pressed the cmos clear button it wouldnt boot even tho i had removed the battery and pressed the button before..

then i had 1 long beep gap long beep etc so changed ram stick
booted to post i went to bios and it warned me that overclock wouldnt work and was reset to default so i guess the previous owner had a dabble
now i have all 4 x512 corsair ram sticks in and carrying on the rebuild testing at each stage..
i believe when i get to the os install i can run repair and it should so i'm told alter to the new hardware and be ok.. just maybe some programs neeed a reinstall
maybe do a clean install just to clean all the trash out
i really appreciate your help as even tho ive built a few pcs before when the dust hits the fan my brain goes awol

all done and running now
when i booted it recognised my os instantly so no installing
only thing i had to install was motherboard drivers and some of them were auto installed

once again thanks for waking me up

Excellent, thats good to hear. If you do get seemingly random issues, a rebuild from scratch normally helps
