Im after a 1080p tv to use with my 360 and PS3. The Sony bravia W2000 is a lot cheaper(899 quid) than it used to be, is it worth getting or are there similarly priced better sets available now?

Also are there any issues with the Bravia w2000 i should be aware of, when using 1080p on it from PS3 or 360.

thanks in advance.

the quality control on the sony w2000 was abysmal

have a search on google for W2000 clouding to see what we mean. And its biggest draw back is that doesnt playback HD content properly. It doesnt support playback of 24p material, so bluray doesnt look smooth on it

if your not an AV enthusiast, and a telly is a telly, then it will probably be fine. But theres a high chance of you getting a model thats clouding, and to add insult to injury, they've repackaged the W2000 as the V3000

its been updated with 3 HDMI and 24p support, and can be had online for £1024 delivered :)

hmmm that doesnt sound to good. Ill have to find an alternative to that then. Any suggestions?.

How about the Samsung LE40M87BDX?

Samsung M87 (currys / dixons exclusive) or M86 are brilliant sets. M86/m87 are identical bar the chrome strip and blue led on the m87 btw :)

they're 1080p 3 HDMI 1.3, properly playaback 24p material on latest firmware. Not too many bugs, there are some but a firmware upgrade sorts them if your reseller sends you old stock. If you do get old stock, request the firmware upgrade from samsung

also worth noting as well that sony / samsung jointly own S-LCD the company that makes the panels for the higher end sonys and samsungs, so the samsungs are a quality piece of kit

personally id be looking at V3000 if your happy paying that bit extra for the sony quality (the menus do seem more responsive on sony, the M86 menus are a bit sluggish, but perfectly livable with)

or the M86/m87 making sure you get one with latest firmware.

my 40w2000 is stunning. clouding was a problem, and isnt at all limited to just the w2000's. or even just sony, though for some reason they were the worst offenders even though they use samsung panels. bear that in mind when you look at some samsung tv's. dont assume they wont have clouding issues.

yep. crap.

They really don't as already pointed out in this thread.

yes they do. sony use samsung panels in their lcd tv's. it's a well known fact. what MrLol said isn't quite true. its a joint venture, but they are samsung panels. what ever that doesnt change the fact that they use the same panels, whatever name is stamped on them. the same issues will plague tv's from both companies so untill this clouding issue is removed completely from the panels (it isnt afaik) it will be a problem for both sony and samsung.

for crying out loud. ok if you want to be anal about this

S-LCD Corporation (Hangul: 에스 엘씨디, Japanese: エス・エルシーディー) is a joint venture between the Korean Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (50% plus 1 share) and Japanese Sony Corporation (50% minus 1 share) established in April 2004 in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. S-LCD currently operates with a monthly production capacity of 60,000 display panels (7th Generation Amorphous Silicon) which are integrated into both Samsung Electronics and Sony LCD televisions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-LCD

samsung have the larger share (buy one anal share) in S-LCD. as if it makes any difference anyway like i said. if they use the same panels, they will suffer the same problems (which i have seen myself).

do you have anything more relevant to add to the thread?

I had two M87's both with terrible clouding, both returned and with the second one I got a refund as I was sure it would happen again. I waited for the F86 and mine doesnt have any clouding but some do. Apparently the new sonys dim the backlight on dark scenes to mask the clouding of the panels

Just my 2p worth.

I have the 40w2000, and think it's a teriffic TV, the only thing I wish it had was 1080p24, though to be honest, I've watched about 20 bluray movies on there so far, and not had a problem with distracting jerkyness.

My set had clouding when I bought it.
It was quite noticable when you had a very very dark scene, or just had black screen.

Within about a month it faded.

I went away during the summer for a month, and when I came back, I noticed clouding again. Within a short amount of time (I forget exactly, as it really wasn't bad, again, unless you just had a black screen) it's now fine again. Every day usage seems to clear the clouding anyway.

I'm more than happy with mine, and never thought it's justified taking it back... though the amount the price has dropped since I bought it 6 months ago is shocking... still, isn't that always the way with tech ;)

V1N.

EDIT: and in answer to the OP, it's a brilliant TV for a PS3, as that's what I use on mine. Just take your time to calibrate it when you first get it... though I guess this is true of any TV. Those standard brightness levels etc are horrific, and 1:1 pixel mapping wasn't selected by default for the HDMI ports.

yep. crap.

never said they were crap

just said that the quality control on them was lacking, because as you agree, the clouding seemed worse on this set than any others

only other thing i knocked it was lack of 24p support, which unlike the very gimmicky 100hz processing of the new X series, appears to be quite usefull.

well, i dont know if it really was any wors[e/i] on the sonys, we just seemd to hear more about it. wether thats because more sonys were sold or not, i dont really know. of the panels i saw, i saw just as many shockingly bad samsungs as i did the sonys. im not going to deny it, i was luck with mine:)

Well i opted for the Samsung LE40M87BDX in the end and im very happy with it. Great SD and HD picture. My only gripe is the slow EPG and the rather functional sound, but im moving my AMP into my Games room soon, so sound wont be a problem soon anyway.

Great price at 799 too :)

Blu ray(PS3) is stunning at 1080P, shame there seems to be a lot of image noise on 300, where as Apocolypto and Blood Diamond is fantasticly clear.

Got the same TV, although mines at samsung being repaired. They are very good! the film 300 has that noise too, its not the TV its the film. Ive seen it on many HD televisions.
