As the title says really, I am upgrading my P4 3.2 to a AMD 3800+ 64bit and whilst I am doing this I will be installing a fresh letup of windows and I have seen a few members rigs are running XP pro x86 but I have never heard of this, is this just the 64bit version of XP ?

Hey wiggyuk, as Justintime quite rightly corrected me, x86 is an architecture, which can be x86-16, x86-32 and x86-64. Windows Vista/XP (x86) is normally refering to the 32-bit side of things but this is not always the case. Sorry for being miss leading. :)

Oh right cheers guys, so looks like everyone knew that except me lol, so should I stick with XP Pro 32bit that I have installed now, should I upgrade to XP Pro 64bit or should I upgrade to Vista 64bit what do you guys reckon ?

Would've thought technically X86 is just the PC architecture which branches off into x86-16, x86-32 and x86-64 etc..

Hey Justintime, yes sorry you're right. x86 is 32-bit is very miss leading, i shouldn't of said it in that way. Thank you Justintime, i have now corrected my post. :)

If you're going to upgrade, and you have a 64-bit processor then i'd recommend just going for Vista x64.

If you're not going to upgrade then just stick with Vista x86 (32-bit). :)

Ok well at the moment I have XP x32 but I want to do a fresh reload of windows when I upgrade so you suggest going to Vista x64 whats the best version is is home premium ?

Also I will be getting a DX10 graphics card do I need Vista x64 to get the full benefit of a DX10 card or does XP x64 run DX10 too ?

check to see if there are 64bit drivers for your hardware

possibly think about getting Vista 64, you lose 16bit support (you'd know if you were running any 16bit apps, they use really really cruddy looking gui's)

So is it worth switching to Vista x64 for the benefit of DX10 ? I have been hearing of people having problems with Vista and switching back to XP ?

Well, there are plenty of people switching back to XP, mainly becuase of driver issues etc, So as long as you can get drivers I wouldn't worry. Although, saying that, DX10 isn't really a great reason to move to Vista yet as there's nothing really that utilises it in the near future.
