Egg Heads this way please!

all you have to do is think what percent the price is.

100% price + 17.5% vat =117.5% all you need to do is get that back down to 100% to get the price without vat.

As already said this thread is rather worrying.

It's akin to something rising in price by 10% and then subsequently falling by 10%. Lots of people think that if this happened the price would be the same as before the rise, but that's not how it works!

It's easy.

VAT is like 10% or summat right? Take 10% away from 3000 and you're left with like 2000. Carry the 5 and you've got 2005. So, yeah, the answer is 2005.

Maths is pretty easy when you think about it properly. I do all my own accounts.

You taking the water? lol

Why has the same "£3000 is 100% so 3000/100x17.5" been posted so many times.
Simplest way i have been taught is
With Vat Divide 1.175
Without Vat Times 1.175

I think people are getting confused. The method only works if you're adding the VAT on, not if you're trying to take the VAT off. They don't realise that 17.5% of (approx.) 2553 is not 17.5% of 3000...

What I find odd is the lack of people checking that their method works before posting it as advice...

I mean it aint too hard to see if what you have just told someone will work actually does is it? ( I actually had to check that what I thought worked really did after reading all of this lot though!)

I'd divide by 1.175 (£2,553.20)to deduct the tax, or multiply by 1.175 (£3,525) to add the tax.

Exactly what I was gonna say - silly to do it any other way to be honest

Price inc VAT / 1.175 = Price exc VAT
Price exc VAT * 1.175 = Price inc VAT

This is one of the scariest threads I have ever read. I really hope some of you never breed or operate heavy machinery. :D
