Why not do the honest thing and phone them up, telling them you think they've made a mistake?

The difference in this case is that you are not "screwing" a company for money you are "screwing" an individual.
I am all for reclaiming bank charges and fees through an ethical approach. Taking advantage of an individuals mistake is somewhat different.
