From HardOCP's 8800GT review:
UPDATE - 10/29/07-8:29am: A very interesting addendum to this. I just got off the phone with BFG Tech and NVIDIA has been doing some strange things lately. As of this morning, the GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (unsure on the 320MB) will have its stream processors officially increased to 112, the same as the GT. This should put the GTS back ahead of the GT as per the paper specs. However, the separation in the products is still going to be very small except for those of you wanting to run high resolutions with AA turned on. To do that you are still going to need a $400+ video card..or so. Our new spec GTS is on the way to us now and we will of course be updating you. Given the GT's faster clocks and possibly larger texture unit, we will have to wait and see. Undoubtedly though, the 8800 GT remains a stellar value at the expected price points.

As expected really. See the article here: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQxMCw2LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

Can't believe for a second they'll market a new card as the 8800GTS as this would lead to massive confusion as the retailers try to shift their stock of old GTS cards by omitting to mention the differences on their websites. Could be a PR catastrophe for NVidia.

Also, they're going to have to breathe on the GTS a lot more than increasing the SPs to 112 or there'll still be no point to it compared to the GT.

Agreed, would it have been that hard to call it the 8900 GT/GTS?

agreed, 512 Vs 640 is hardly a big difference

Could the not just list it as 8800 GTS Rev. 2 ??? Like OCZ did with their memory lines

Hope its not the new one (G92), same as the old (G80), just unlocked a few more SP's. BFG has one as well, could just be a way of getting rid of the old PCB stock. Otherwise I'm looking at getting an Ultra.

Well that looks like it will struggle to beat a GT?????

The clock speeds are pants on all three. Surely this can't be the new GTS?

I was holding out for a GTS after selling mine and seeing the "cash cow" rpicing of some websites today on the GT but I think I'll just wait a couple of weeks and get the GT if that is the best the GTS is going to be.

so is the new GTS just the same as the one we have now, just with 112 streams, and on the smaller process, so it wont have the extra texture bits of the GT.

The one meantioned is the same as the current one with 112SP. Same old 90nm larger process, no extras. Don't know if this is the new one or a slight refresh to clear the old.

They have to release something better soon or all they'll sell is mid range GT's.

How much are Ultra's now?:o

Wouldn't be a bad thing

The cash is in the mid range market not enthusiast.

Price em low bring in the punters

Maybe if the market changes so will the ridiculous game requirements. ;)

Of course the numbers are in the mid range, but they don't make much on each one compared to the top end. And would they want to be known for being a one track pony? They'll want a spread to get a foothold in each niche.

It's clear that 8800GT will appear in the market in monday, 29th Oct. But maybe you are all thinking about the second G92 product: new 8800GTS.

According to the sources, the new 65nm 8800GTS will announce in Monday,19th Nov, a week later than 780i(12nd Nov). The price is CNY2299(~305 USD) .

It's known new 8800GTS will have 128 SP. But still no evdience about the core clock, memory clock and shader clock. The score we have earlier already prove that 8800GT can beat 8800GTS(old). And we believe the 65nm 8800GTS(new) will better than 8800GTX(old).

So please be awared of 29th Oct,and 29th Nov. And please remember the RV670 will be coming 15th Nov.

Doesn't matter the big numbers are in mid end, they will catar for the enthusiast but it won't be top priority

This card is about NVIDIA getting their foothold back into the mid range market which ATi has pretty much dominated for a long time

It's all about NVIDIA getting back into price/performance

Enthusiasts have been put on the back burner.

As I said, numbers are in the mid range, so profits. They've released the killer mid card, the top tier can't be far behind with the same core. The GT pulls up on the older cards, so they don't have the coverage. There's little or no point in the next two cards as far as price and performance are concerned. They must have something to persuade the GTS/GTX owners to move on, even if the percentage is less than the GT.

EDIT: Thought, oh noes, not a 8800GX2?

dl

I mean they have the cores right?

They will let the GT have it's fame for a good while before they market anything else.
