Currently I stand with AMD Athlon XP 2400, 768MB DDR PC2700, Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP), 36GB HDD.

I need a new Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Video card, HDD.

Any suggestions?
 
I will be using it for gaming.

Overclocking is something I have avoided over the years as its very risky if you don't know what you're doing. So I stay away from doing it.

I'm overbudget here but it's totally worth it. This is an amazing value IMO. :)

EDIT: If you really need me to I can chop it down to get it within the budget.

I can go over budget, I just don't want to spend too much.

I like the look of what you have suggested. I saw some bundles (Mobo, Processor, RAM) that look liked good value (to me atleast). Do you not recommend these?
 
Usually just being in a bundle ups the price over that of the original components if purchased separately by 3-5%. If you already know that the parts will work together I see no reason to pay extra for a bundle. If the bundle has the parts in it that you want and costs less than the parts when separate, go for it.

OcUK's bundles typically have RAM that's a bit excessive for the rest of the spec. I imagine they sell more that way but there's usually money to be saved. :)

EDIT: What're your power supply and case like? You probably want at least 28A on the 12V rail for this setup and a decent amount of room for the length of the graphics card. It's not that long but it is longer than a 9600 Pro.
 
Case is fine, plenty of space.

Unsure about the PSU, all I know that it is a cheap crappy 400W one I got a few years ago.

Thanks to theses forums & many others around the world, manufacturers have had to make their components overclocking 'friendly' :) The gains to be had especially with chips like Intel's C2D are just ridiculous. Its now also foolproof, i.e. you'd either be a complete tool or unlucky to damage anything. All you have to do is pick-up the right parts (ones known to OC well) & you're good to go ;)

Anyway, here's my spec suggestion...



Thrown in a new case & PSU because current hardware require good & efficient cooling & a nice stable ATX v2.x PSU with 24-pin, PCI-E, SATA, etc connectors. Also for any modern GFX, minimum recommended on the +12V Rail is a combined 28A. Both should last you a long time & several more upgrades/builds.
 
the sonata's arent exacly good and efficient at cooling, dont know where you got that from. but i like the look of the first suggestion, its got a 8800, 2gb ram your sorted, bargain realy.

ditch the sonata and the gfx and go for the 125 quid 8800 gt's :)

Ok, this looks like the one I am going to choose.

In the past I have always bought the bundles where the Processor was already attached to the Motherboard. When I buy these components separately do they come with a cooling device for the processor or do I need to buy that separately as well?

Also, could you suggest a new PSU for me? I have decided to boost my budget to £500.

A cooler will come with the processor. As above the Corsair VX 450 is a good PSU. If you're looking for a little more future-proofing you could get an HX 520. :)
