Can some kind person tell me if Castrol GTX 10w40 (for petrol engines) is semi-synthetic please. Their website does not seem to have this info and google is not returning anything either.

Many thanks

what car is it for?

1.4 Pug 306 petrol.

Which would be better out of these?

Castrol GTX
Havoline semi synthetic
Fuchs XTR semi synthetic
Total Quartz 7000 semi synthetic (Pug recommend this one but its quite expensive and not easy to get hold of apart from the pug dealer)

All 10w40 by the way.

the cheapest... id get fuchs from GSF. very cheap and meets some high standards. id use it in mine if GSF wasnt 30 miles away

Not much difference in the price although Asda is easier for me to get to. GSF is about 6miles away from me.

Castrol GTX £12 for 4L (£18 for 6L) (ASDA)
Havoline semi synthetic £13 for 5L (ASDA)
Fuchs XTR semi synthetic £10.70ish +vat for 5L (GSF)
Total Quartz 7000 semi synthetic £18ish +vat for 5L (Pug dealer)

GTX is a basic mineral oil. You'd be far better off with one of the others - a semi-synth will stay in grade for longer and offer better protection as it will (usually) have a higher HT/HS rating.

(Incidentally, GTX Magnetec is also a mineral oil - it's not a true semi-synth - it simply has synthetic additives as well as a lot of marketing gumpf behind it!)

Are you a read and repeat knowledge person?

All oils have HTHS values, infact the reason most synthetics offer better fuel economy is due to lower HTHS values.

Magnatec is semi-synthetic. Synthetic additives lol.

wasnt magnatetc the one that was not allowed to be sold in the US because the marketing was a lie.

ive heard horrible stories about magnatetc, wouldnt put it in my lawnmower after what ive heard

It's called 'Start Up' in the USA.

Marketing is not a lie at all. If it was why is it sold in the whole world without problem. It has tonnes of data supporting the cold wear protection story.

Horrible stories? What are they then?

cars running rough/smokey once magnatec was put in, it being burnt fast, being sent off for analysis and being found to be MILES out of grade after 300-400 miles and the car returning to normal once other oil was put in.

what data you got there about the cold start stuff? you recon the 'magnetic' bit is true?

Magnatec is cack.

It's a cheap mineral base oil with a Slick50 type synthetic additive added along with a multi-million marketing budget to make the gullible fools - like Simon - buy it.

I bet you also think that a Mars a day makes you work rest and play! LOL.

it was the analysis results that basically shocked me, the oil was spent after a few hundred miles (of pretty much normal driving).

all semi synths are a base oil plus synthetic additives, the differences are that the manufacturers have different blends, it seems the maganetc one aint great, hence ill stick with millers of fuchs.

as for magnetic? what do you do when the oil is dead and ready to be changed but the dead oil is still clinging to your engine because it is 'magnetic'
