40GB PS3 features 65nm chips

If I had a PS3 and wanted to play a PS2 game (of which there are literally NONE left to worry about, unless you havnt played GOW2 or Okami yet or whatever) I'd just load it on my PS2. BC is literally a non-issue in my opinion unless you play your current console to death that is.

but this wasn't what everyone was saying when Sony announced that all their PS2 games would be backward compatible and having a dig at the trouble MS was having with their xbox1 backwards compatability on the 360. Everyone was raving on saying how great Sony was and how important it was and how MS suck. Its funny how now that it means a cheaper console without it and how PS2 compatabilitiy hasn't really worked that suddenly its not needed anymore and all is rosey in the land of Sony

I wouldn't like to be without my BC, I quite often fire up a PS2 game and even PS1 games on my PS3 (just been playing Syphon Filter for example)

I'm working on my PS2 Collection as we speak :D

The problem is Sony couldn't really win, they will get slated by someone for whatever they do. The all frills almost fully backwards compatible PS3 was too expensive for the majority so they had to cut features to enable them to release an already sold at loss machine for even less. The PS2 chip was the only hardware feature that could be removed to enable them to lower the price, alright they could have perhaps dropped the Wi-Fi support but that then messes up their PS3-PSP connectivity plans (if its not avaliable on all models then the developers won't bother to make features that take advantage of it - the same as if they'd released one version without a hard disc).

BC is still avaliable if you want it although you will pay a premium - as far as I'm aware theres no current plans to drop the 80gb version in America atleast (not sure about their plans over here but no doubt they will be revealed once the 60gb supply runs out) so BC will remain avaliable for those who value and want it. The 40gb gives those who just want a PS3 at a cheaper price what they want, and really is what the orignal 20gb model should have been in my opinion.

option to what?, both consoles at launch could play last gen software, unless you brought a core?, now you cannot on their what is meant to be mainstream console (40gig)

So a core isnt mainstream (apart from the fact that cores where initially outselling premiums on initial release, and probably still are until they disappear)?

Even then th bc of the X360 was severely limited on release of the console and had to be worked on

Neither company has done brilliantly with BC, but yes Sony gave the choice to consumers and they thought it too expensive and un-necessary, which is why the 40GB has been released

well according to here the core isn't worth it and most buy premiums, and yes backwards compatability was severely limited and how the PS3 fanboys rubbed salt into the wound (so to speak) that the PS3 will be and now all of a sudden its fine not to have it AT ALL (presently after 60gig has gone untill some other announcement) yet everyone who wants BC has gone and got a 60gig rather than the 40gig. Then you say MS never gave people the choice whilst Sony is but clearly you already said like me that there was the core for those that don't want BC, so your post was sort of missleading, hence my reply

All i dont get is, The core only didnt do backwards compatibility because it had to no hard drive. All the BC data was stored on it.

The PS3 40gb version, Has a hard drive obviously, and considering BC isnt hardware driven on the PS3 but emulated. I dont get why its been removed. Surely it was more work to remove the feature. Than keep it in place, Unless maybe the emulator takes up loads of space? And maybe they felt the 40gb Disc would be over crowded? I dunno. Just seems wierd to remove something thats software driven.

It is hardware driven, not software emulated.

Are you sure? I was under the impression the BC chip was just in japanese consoles, and we ended up with a software emulated version in europe.

Positive. the reason the new PS3's can't do BC is because the PS2's graphics chip has been removed from them. The CPU was emulated but the bandwidth of the graphics card meant that it had to be a physical processor rather than a virtually emulated one.

This is true.

It's the emotion engine that was removed from EU PS3's.

Now the GPU has been removed from the 40GB version as well.

At the end of the day Sony gave their customers the option - MS never did

I don't follow that logic Frank..

All MS consoles give you the 'option' of BC, it's just that in the case of the CORE, you need to buy an accessory (HDD) to get BC..

With Sony, you either buy it with/without, and if you buy it without you can't get BC at all, ever..

Seems to me like MS give you a much better choice? or am I missing something?
