What is Hallowe'en?

Hallowe'en originated in Ireland. It is known in Ireland as The Pagan festival of "Samhain" (Sow-ahn). It has been celebrated in Ireland by the Celts for thousands of years. In prehistoric Ireland, locations such as:

"Brú na Bóinne"

and "

Dún Aonghasa"

Both these sites predate the Egyptian Pyramids and Stone Henge, and were known to be popular Celtic Samhain Celebration sites in Ireland.

Thousands of Irish Celts congregated in these sacred sites in Ireland. They sacrificed animals, burned huge fires, and decorated themselves with branches and face paints to scare the Celtic spirits away from Ireland.

As the Irish tribes (The Scoti) emigrated North to what is now know as Scotland, the tradition of Samhain became an Irish and Scottish tradition.

So why is Hallowe'en celebrated in the States, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa? Simply because the Irish emigrated there after being forced out of Ireland during the Irish Penal Laws and the disastrous Irish Famine.

So now you know. Happy Hallowe'en everyone, MWAH MWAH MWAH HAHHHHH! Now you know why we all celebrate this ancient Celtic festival.

Have a look at these Vids: You might want to move here! :p

im working, then im going to the pub when i get in to watch the sheff utd and arsenal match, to avoid all the little gits banging on my door begging for sweets and money :p

don't celebrate it, too americanized, have 3 kids 9, 12, 16 who won't be trick or treating tonight, anyone who knocks on my door will get ignored this evening

Grumpy old bugger :p:p

You are right about it becoming americanised, when we were kids (im about the same age as you), then you went out, you did a party trick or told a joke, there was no danger of getting your car egged and marauding gangs of people coming round demanding money or sweets.

I love Halloween, the only day of the year where I can cover myself in blood and not get arrested:D.
Nah, i'm going to the yearly Halloween party at Glasgow uni, was amazing last year, going as a zombie.
It will be epic this time around as I got dumped by my gf last friday so me and a friend will be pretending to be going out just to make her jealous...childish, I know :).

Studenty house party for me tonight :) Happily coincides with my day off uni and my day off training :D

This is a cool thread. Nice to know the background on it!

My company is paying for a meal then I am going home and packing bags for going to cyprus with work.

Grumpy sod! Prepare to be egg'd by the local DSS.

I'm getting dressed up with a load of people from work. Going as a Zombie (original i know!)

Need some tips for outfit.

So far i have an old suite jaket, which i will make cuts/rips in. Got some white and black face paint, and some red gel blood.

Need to get some old trousers and a white shirt as well.

Any other tips? :)

It is glorified begging. I can't understand why children are taught to not talk to strangers or take their sweets, then today they will go round strangers houses taking sweets

So, they will be ignored, as I can't stand kids, might even electrocute the fence.
The "early" ones who go with Parents are ok, they tend to ring once and go away when you don't answer the door, its the chavs later on that get on my boobies :(

I'm lucky, recently moved to a private street and there's no-one under the age of 30 on the entire street (apart from a baby next door) so no locals and we're away from anywhere really residential - I don't expect anyone knocking on the door - but just in case, I'm going out for a few beers :D

Im staying in protecting the dog from all the fireworks that have already started round here in the evenings.
He was trained as a hearing dog, so he is extra sensitive to sound bless him, the rabbits arent too keen on it either.
Plus as I live in a flat up three floors I dont usually get many ringing on my door.

I've rigged the door access up to the mains. I don't give a **** if my neighbours need in or out of the place...
