Defence attorney Jonathan Katz's argument that the $2.9m in compensatory damages already far exceeded the defendants' net worth and would be enough to "bankrupt them and financially destroy them" was ignored.

This is great from one point of view, but saddening from another.

I can't really understand the brand of hate these people preach, but if they are bankrupted it's going to affect the children no end, who are simply born into the hate. Weird. I remember that there was quite a discussion about Louis Theroux's show that he did on them. I definitely think it's a good thing if they will no longer be able to afford to go around to various funerals to picket them, but why hasn't social services taken the kids away?

Seems this was a civil case with a jury and I wouldn't be surprised if on appeal in front of purely a judge the amount is massively reduced if not overturned completely.

Good. I disapprove of what they say and I certainly won't defend to the death their right to say it.

'god hates fags.com'

where can i get my tshirt?

On a more serious note homosexuality is unnatural and if everyone was gay the world would slowly die out. However (IMO) god is a made up figure by people who are unsecure

Someones death should never be celebrated, whether gay or not.

Good, I hope every single one of them drops dead and goes straight to hell.

You have to wonder about their level of intelligence, when you see people not being able to tolerate others.

So unnatural that it happens in nature - but we've covered this ground before.

As the OP said, the real sad part is how the kids are indoctrinated into the way of life. When Theroux was interviewing them they all had stock answers for his questions which they were clearly use to receiting. I don't think the "church" will go on beyond this generation.

Irony much? You're intolerant of them because they are aren't as tolerant as you, and you actively wish them death?

You cant wave the free speech flag when your invading peoples funerals!

Free speech is maybe that but aimed at goverments not at a singular person.

Thats just sick...

I have met some of these people and they follow every word in the bible.
Which here and in some parts of the world is bad.

But I think you have to look at both sides.
Is it right that here we tend to bend what the bible says to to suite ourselves.
Were they stick to every word for good or bad.

I am not sticking up for them but if you think about it
Did god in the bible say bend my rules as you want to?
And $10 is not a lot for the Baptist church.
I.E there is a unwritten rule in there church that the big money guys
Give 5%-10% of there companys profits to the church

If I remember rightly from the documentary, all the money the people make goes back to the church, as it's their father/uncle/whatever who is the head.

Except there are only 70-150 (depending on which source you use) of the Westboro Baptist Church.

No they don't. Their entire faith is based on a few passages from the Old Testament.

The Westboro lot are not part of the Baptist church despite their name - they are basically one family of about 30-50 people. I doubt very much they can afford $10m - their lawyer claims it will bankrupt them.

It's not a church it's a cult.

Great fine, there complete idiots. The kids need to be taken of the parents and the parents need to be locked up.

Free speech should only be given to those that respect it. WBC clearly don't and thus I'm quite glad they have had their ass fined to bankruptcy.

Only hope an appeal doesn't massively reduce it, however this case has no doubt set a precedent that will result in many other familys suing them ^^
