Westboro Baptist Church fined $10m

Its easy to denigrate free speech when you don't agree with what they say. I believe in free speech, but hate mongering is a fine line. I don't agree with what they say, but I *have* to defend their right to say it or become a hypocrite myself.

@ geeza... unnecessary to turn this into a thread based on any of their ideals, and you don't endear people to you with hate.

Free speech should only be given to those that respect it. WBC clearly don't and thus I'm quite glad they have had their ass fined to bankruptcy.
So it's only free speech while you don't object to what they are saying, or arbitrarily decide that they aren't "abusing" it?
I agree with Shoseki, I don't like what they are saying either, but I don't think it is appropriate to try to silence them by bankruptcy. Respond to their speech with your own (for example at military funerals there are troops of bikers that attend specifically to ensure the family doesn't have to see or hear these people), or ignore it, they know that they are considered controversial and play off that fact to get more publicity.

Good. It's absolutely disgusting what they do, especially that they are indoctrinating their children with all this crap. It should be illegal. They are not fit to be parents/in care of children.

And I'm really dissapointed that nobody has gone on a shooting rampage at their premesis. Come on America, we know you can do it!

'god hates fags.com'

where can i get my tshirt?

On a more serious note homosexuality is unnatural

Homosexuality as an unnatural phenomenon is 100% scientifically rejected.

From male killer whales that ride the dorsal fin of another male to female bonobos (dwarf chimpanzee) that rub their genitals together, the animal kingdom excepts all kinds of lifestyles.

With more than 1,500 species displaying homosexuality it's ridiculous and totally incorrect to claim homosexuality as unnatural.

And it has been confirmed from invertebrates (like crayfish and beetles) till the anthropoid (man like) apes.

penski - yes (not off a male)

Ok. Bisexuality in species will happen (as in the pic) but if all monkeys only had gay sex surely they would die out?

unless i missed something the article doesn't say anything about the soldier being gay, but that they are celebrating his death because god is punishing America for supporting homosexuality.

for that... I'm glad they have been fined and i hope they get shut down. It looks like they are getting bored and are now campaigning any death they can find to rally their cause

Yes they believe any unnatural death is caused by God as a punishment on America for turning against him.

I guess they only read the old testament in the Bible...

But it's not natural...

Not bisexuality. Homosexuality - it is VERY well-recorded in hundreds if not thousands of species.

Hell, I even have a pair of male swans that nest about 100m from my house. Little swanny poofters. Not little bi swans.

Nobody is saying that ALL individuals in a species are engaging in bottery; merely that homosexuality is natural and that it occurs in some individuals in thousands of species.

You jumped the gun abit didn't you? at what point did I state that the "respect to freedom of speech" has anything to do with objections to my opinions? At no point did I say people should only have freedom of speech if I don't object.

My point is that the WBC is quite at liberty to state their opinion of America and their religious belief and how that translates to their stance on homosexuals etc etc. However I believe they abuse their freedom of expression when they use it to purposely emotionally hurt others, and use abusive language in the process.

This concept is exemplified by our judicial system. Every citizen is entitled to freedom, yet when they abuse their freedom by performing acts deemed anti social (crimes) their right to freedom is revoked and are thus imprisoned.

No they don't. Their entire faith is based on a few passages from the Old Testament.

Totally agree,
What they display is not Christian, its hate-fuelled.

Dont flame me for this but I think that homosexuality is wrong (so are many others things that people do too), but I WONT go around shouting it at people, demanding that they immediately change the way they live because of my belief.

God gave us all free will to choose how we live, I choose to try and live a life that pleases God because of the amazing love that He has for me (and you), despite my failings, a love that took Jesus to the cross to win me back to himself and save me from Hell. There is nothing that I can do to accomplish what God has done for me, I cannot earn my way to Heaven, just accept and believe that God has done everything required through Christ.

The 'church' in America has many problems and radical views that damage how people see true Christians, which is a great shame.

While they're at liberty to say that 'God hates fags' there's absolutely no need for them to attend funerals and such, absolutely outrageous. Such extremist groups are sickening.

They really are idiots. I remember in one video they were thanking the lord for the Virginia Tech massacre, claiming it was an act of god in punishment for society's acceptance of homosexuality. Utterly ridiculous.

But God doesn't hate 'fags', He loves them as much as you and I. Christ died for us all, not good straight white people alone, as some people seem to see it.

One of the most difficult questions to answer for any Christian, is "if god is good and just, why does he let terrible things happen to good people?". This seems like some disturbed take on using that question to further their own political purposes. "God does those things because of X".

Squark, agree completely with both your posts.

Not got a lot else to add. I'm glad that these guys have been fined as it's all hate filled nonsense and these views are drummed into the kids at such a young age that they know nothing else as they haven't had the opportunity to think for themselves.

As an earlier poster (bam0) mentionned, I'd be very surprised if this fine sticks, they'll no doubt appeal and I can see it being overturned/reduced.
