Running Vista 64bit (updated) & Windows Media Centre (use joypad to control video playback on TV).

Vista 32bit WMC managed HD MKV's fine but Vista 64 is being a pig :(

Possibly the codec maturity is causing problems, I've tried:

Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2007-10-23v2 (only allows playback of MKV in Windows)
ffdshow_rev1328_20070706_x64 (on its own there's no MKV playback)
VistaCodecs_v452B2 (install with x64Components & WMC plays HD MKV's but with very bad stutters every 5 seconds)
x64Components_v133B2 (use with VistaCodecs for Vista64)

Using following RegEdit CCCP wont work with WMC:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mkv]
"PerceivedType"="video"

Can anyone play HD MKV files in Vista64 WMC? If so how?

thanks...

You've just got me wondering, I'm planning to move over to 64bit vista (from 32bit vista) and i've been a bit worried about what will and what won't work. I will be trying it anyway to at least see what it's like, so if you haven't had any more insight into it, I'll give it a test tomorrow/friday since i watch a lot of HD MKVs myself.

I have MKV running fine in 64bit Vista, I have the vista codec pack and the add on 64bit pack and everything plays fine in WMC. What you want to do is switch mediaplayer over to 64bit so you can test the codecs as by default WM11 runs as 32bit and uses 32bit codecs and see if you still have the problem. It may be worth removing all the codecs off the machine and just putting on the vista codec pack then the 64 bit pack as this should allow you to play anything.

I can play hd mkv / wmc in windows great with media player classic or wmp11 (32bit or 64bit), its just wmc stutters them.

Maybe wmc is using a dodgy filter somewhere, but I've removed everything & re-installed but still no go.

I use use a very simple & old key to joypad program which allows the setting up of a joypad button to eg be the same as pressing 'enter'. I'll have to set it up to be able control media player classic untill I get wmc sorted.

A pity xbox1 cant play hd stuff or the xbox1 media centre environment software wasn't available on pc as that can play anything <960x640res & the navigation layout & everything is far superior to wmc.

Is MatroskaSplitter = to Haali Media splitter ?

The only way wmc will play badly an mkv is by installing:
VistaCodecs_v452B2
x64Components_v133B2

After installing MatroskaSplitter wmc cant play mkv at all until reset & then they still stutter.

Weird that it works fine in 64bit WMP11 as it will be using the same codecs as WMC, you could try one thing which is a very long shot. Before I updated the BIOS on the videocard (2600xt) mkvs played slowly in WMC and 64bit WMP11 one work around I found was to activate something in 64 bit ffdshow like the OSD this for some reason I never found out resolved the issue. I then just used logoaway as a work around with the size set to minium and right in the top left corner so it would not affect the picture.

This cleared itself when I updated the BIOS on the graphics card it also resolved the corrupt parts of playback I got from VC-1 HD DVDs.

Tried the osd/logo away, 40% cpu time for hd, eek!
Hmm I never thought of the graphics card, maybe new drivers messing up?
So the difference between wmc & wmp11 is the answer.

Something funny there aswell as my E6600 running at stock only takes 25-30% cpu when doing software decoding.

It could be the graphic card drivers, I had a lot of trouble with artifacts in red colours with mpeg2 on DVDs/TV, distorted play back with blu-ray and HD DVD and it wouldn't play powerdvd in a window without grinding to a halt. All were sorted by a BIOS upgrade on the graphics card and registery tweaks to the graphic card driver settings.
