I just went to the Portsmouth 24 hour Tesco as they have an offer on atm for Fireworks only to get told by the lady at the counter that they are 'closed'. This was 8:06pm.

What does that mean then. The store is 24 hour, is there some law I don't know about saying fireworks can only be sold before 8pm :confused:

Yes, Port Solent and at 26 I'd like to think I look old enough!

I wouldn't mind normally but I made a special trip after they dropped the leaflet through my door.

Certainly isn't law so it's either Tesco's policy or that particular stores policy.

Sounds like either a local store policy, or local council policy (don't places that sell fireworks have to be licensed now?)

Either way it sounds like a sensible decision to me if it helps cut down on drunks getting hold of them on the spur of the moment.

just because the store is open 24hours doesnt mean all the departments are.

bakery for instance closes at 6, and most other departments at 8.

If thats the case then why stay open if MOST other departments are shut also. not anti tescos just in a tongue in cheek humour mode tonight ;)

Well most things you buy in a supermarket will still be available! If it's the store policy not to sell fireworks after 8pm then it seems fairly sensible to me. I can understand you being annoyed if their advertising didn't point it out and you made a special journey though.

Aye, and it only costs a very small amount extra to keep the store open 24 hours than say 8-8, as at night they only need a couple of cashiers (or staff who are able to work as cashiers) in addition to the normal night crew.

I suspect they probably get a lot more than the cost of those additional staff in sales most nights ;) (I often go to our Tesco's late night as it's quieter and faster to do general shopping at night, and there is almost always a few people with the same idea).

Where I work, the bakery, cafe, customer service and kiosk, all close at or around 8pm. There's just simply not enough demand to keep these departments open at that time. It's a waste of resources. You can still shop for 99% of other things sold in store.

Why does everyone say "tesco'S" ? Its tesco! Anyway, i was in HMV'S earlier (just the one shop) buying a CD.

I'd be pretty annoyed if I'd made the journey especially. Did the leaflet not mention this in the small print? If not then I'd put in a complaint. You'll probably just get an apology but there's a chance you might get some a £10 voucher or something.

I work on a fireworks till at my local Teascos and we shut the fireworks at 8 aswell. Not quiet sure why we do this but at our store it was quiet hard to get staff to cover all the shifts. And business isn't as good as during the day so i why pay somneone like me just to sit there and serve 1 person every hour. Plus all the chavs are out at night.
