Alonso to leave McLaren

Oh dear. I'm truly gutted.

That is also a really really bad pic of him:D

I'd rather he'd have been sacked and the team refocused before the end of the season.

He really behaved like a spoilt child imo and it'll be interesting to see where he goes

YAy, good riddance you cheating a-hole.

Fia wouldn't of found out, if it wasn't for alosnso, shooting your own team in the foot is a new low for anyone.

Dont let the door hit you on the way out.

But he should have been sacked for gross miss conduct.

FERNANDO ALONSO AND VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES AGREE TO MOVE ON - 2 November 2007

Woking, 2nd November 2007: Following a meeting between Fernando Alonso and McLaren, it was agreed that it would be in the best interests of both parties to bring the relationship to an end.

The mutual parting of ways has not been discussed until now, since it was felt that any such discussion could have seriously disrupted the team’s and Fernando’s 2007 Formula 1 World Championship challenge. Both parties believe that this was the right decision.

FERNANDO ALONSO:
“Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out. I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team. Yes, we have had our ups and downs during the season, which has made it extra-challenging for all of us, and it is not a secret that I never really felt at home. I know there have been suggestions of favouritism within the team and people say a lot of things in the heat of battle, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win. Today’s decision allows all of us to focus on 2008, and I wish the team, Vodafone, Banco Santander, Mutua Madrileña and all the other team Partners who I have worked closely with during the year, the best for the future.”

RON DENNIS:
“Everybody at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, especially McLaren’s Spanish Partners Banco Santander and Mutua Madrileña and the team’s title partner Vodafone, want to wish Fernando all the best for the future. He is a great driver but for some reason the combination of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Fernando has not really worked out, and in the end we reached a stage where none of us could find a way to move forward. We all believe that our joint decision to part company is for the best, and we will now continue to focus on our 2008 World Championship challenge.”

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes will announce any additions to its existing driver line-up in due course.

Pretty much covers it :p

I'd like to see Kovalainen alongside Hamilton at McLaren next year, but not sure if ron would want two inexperienced drivers, but then what other options are there, Ralf Schumacher? :p

But he's the 3rd best driver in the world! :D

He is, but it's no point being the best driver if he acts like he does and gets the teams points stripped away. He was extremely lucky the fia couldn't prove it without his help, otherwise he would have been stripped of points as well.

If Hamilton wasn't Alonsos team mate for this year then I strongly doubt people would give a **** about this years antics. All sides of Mclaren looked silly this year, smarmy comments thrown round from the drivers and the team boss... In the end they lost everything.
I'm glad he's left Mclaren and hope Renault try to get him back.

Mclaren going for Button? Doubt it, not with his tainted name after Buttongate, why would he leave Honda anyway? Bet he gets far better treatment there than he ever could expect from Mclaren, they've got their driver now.

I strongly believe Button/Honda will get it right soon and it'll only be a matter of time before James Allen changes his idol again.

Edit: Reading the spoilt child comments again... Both drivers behaved like children this year? Some people still got the blinkers on I think.
Where FA got it wrong was with his (from what we're told) attempt to blackmail Ron.

I would can't comment about anyone else, but it wouldn't matter who is team mate was, he's shown his real character this year I cant stand little babies and then he got his own team a huge fine and striped of points, because he threw his toys out his bag.

Dissapointed to see him go. I wanted him to really have a ding-dong battle with Hamilton next year. With Hamilton more experienced and Alonso settled right from the start, at McLaren. I enjoyed the spits and spats that went on throughout the year. When those 2 raced eachother it felt like they really hated eachother and would do anything to beat eachother, even if they werent fighting for points. We saw this in the last GP where Hamilton was so incensed that Alonso was ahead of him, he tried a kamikazee move that resulted in him losing places. We hadnt seen this since the days of Mansell, Senna and Prost.

Anyway, lets look to the future. Next year, I'm predicting with Alonso gone, McLaren wont be competing for any titles, unless Hamilton can show further improvement. How McLaren perform next year will be very interesting indeed.

Also, whichever team Alonso moves to, we shall get to see just how good he really is. Red Bull and Renault are favourites - both teams were terrible this year.

What interested me most was the following:

"It has been widely speculated that wherever Alonso ends up next season, it will be for only a year before moving to Ferrari."

"Ferrari last month extended Felipe Massa's contract to 2010, which appeared to end the possibility of Alonso joining in 2009 because Raikkonen is also contracted to the team for another two years."

"It is possible that a vacancy could be made for Alonso by paying up Massa's contract at the end of next season."

The prospect of Alonso racing Raikkonen is mouth-watering.

One question though: people are accusing Alonso of cheating - can you clear this up, as I am unaware of him cheating?

I just can't see him going to Ferrari - his whole issue with McLaren was that he was never made the clear number one driver - and he certainly won't be able to get that sort of duality at Ferrari, especially not alongside someone like Kimi.

I hope he comes back to us here at Renault - although the recent rumours would suggest otherwise.
