What card(s) would you recommend to game at 2560x1600 - and would that be a single or SLI/Crossfire implementation?

I have to get a Dell 30" for work, and it seem too good an opportunity to miss - I want to get the best possible gaming graphics config.

Thanks...

Depends the 8800GTX would be able to handle most games at the resolution, you probably aren't going to need too much AA at 2560x1600.

Dual 8800GTX to be safe, dual 8800GT's if you are on a budget.

...to game...

If you want the best possible gaming graphics config for a 30" screen then you need SLI GTXs or possibly GTs if you want to spend less and overclock, though just around the corner is a faster version of the GTS 640 that should dump on the GTX.

Have you got any specific games in mind, as with Crysis for example, even 2 GTXs will struggle at that res. on any high settings. You may have to scale down the image.

Agreed, certain games are really waiting or the "next gen" cards to be used at MAX settings.

You may have to scale down the image.

I think I'd rather play with some setting at "medium" before I wanted to play with a "scaled" image (the dell are pretty good at scaling mind)

Games I'm thinking of are FEAR, Stalker, Bioshock, World in Conflict, Crysis, DiRT. I appreciate that I may be better waiting for the new GTS's... - I guess the moral seems to be "...an SLI pair of the fastest I can get at the time..."?

For the record I'm looking at a Q6600 SCLAR level cpu, the only rub is what is the latest and greatest mobo to support SLI?

Thanks.

Good point about the need for AA at this res... hadn't considered that.

Although bear in mind the screen is larger too. The actual DPI is only 6.7% higher than a 24" 1920x1200 screen. If it were 2560x1600 on a 24" screen then I'd agree with you but at 30" there's still a need (or at least desire) for some moderate AA in many games.

I've seen a few people with the 30" Dell at LANs and frankly, none of them ran it at native res for any games as it was just too demanding. Sure it's superb for Windows work but modern games will bring even SLI GTXs to their knees at this res with AA enabled.

2 EVGA Blackpearl 8800 ultra's would be the best possible at this time.

A system like this would take some beating but so would your bank balance,

2x EVGA GeForce 8800 Ultra Black Pearl WaterCooled 768MB

2x Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit.

Asus P5N32-E SLi nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard.

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
