Is this a known problem with Intel P35 motherboards?

Is anyone familiar with the "double boot" or "Autoreboot" problem that seems to affect motherboards with the Intel P35 chipset?

I want to buy a motherboard for a Core 2 Duo e6550 and was looking at the Intel P35 boards by Abit and MSI. I have come across a lot of comments about the double boot problem in the P35 mobos, where when you power on the PC, it will start to boot up, but then 3 seconds later it will shut down and then reboot. Apparently this happens every time whenever you power on the PC. There are many accounts of this, here is one:

From what is discussed here, this affects all Intel P35 boards, from all manufacturers. If anyone has a Intel P35 board, have you noticed this "boot- shutdown-reboot" behavior?

It shouldn't happen every time, but yes it certainly happens now and again. P965 had the same issue (if it is indeed an issue).

I'm perplexed by this. This is what is holding me back from getting an Intel P35 motherboard. Any reason for this double boot behavior, or is it a bug? Has Intel said anything about this, and can it be fixed?

i think the question should be: will it affect me when im doing anythign other than booting the system up?

which would be a no:p

Maybe, but if you test a lot of software and have to reboot the computer often, this could be an annoying headache, and as one commenter said:

"I can't imagine how much life this is taking off of my hard drives. I cringe every time the system starts, then 3 seconds later stops, then a couple seconds later (while the fans and hd's are still spinning) starts up again."

my current board "965P-S3" does this all the time, I just ignore it, it doesn't affect the boards performance at all. People who complain about this "issue" are just nit picking.

It may be nitpicking about this issue if you rarely reboot your PC. But if you reboot your PC often, in the long run this could be a big irritant, not to mention long term wear and tear on your hardware.

So far most of the complaints about this double boot behavior comes from people who own P35 mobos by Abit and MSI. I have as yet not read complaints from those who own P35 mobos made by ASUS. If ASUS P35 motherboards are somehow saved from this double boot behavior, then I will definitely purchase one.

Are there any ASUS P35 motherboard owners? If so, do you find this same rebooting behavior with them or not?

My Abit IP35 does it all the time, annoyed me so i just put it on standby every time i wanna turn it off :)

I just made a post about this. I have this problem on my Gigabyte GA-G33-DS2R board. It's really annoying cause it knocks out my overclock settings when it does it, I have to go into bios and but the cpu clock control back to manual from auto/default.

It only does it from a cold boot after the PC has been off a long time. It does stay plugged into mains though.

How do we get around this? Surely this is a hardware fault!

re. the abits:
the Pro doesn't do it because uGuru interferes with the reason for it - strap setting.
If you upgrade to the beta BIOS 13 the IP35-E & IP35 won't do it either except if power has been totally removed from the mobo in which case they'll do it the first time but not thereafter until power is again totally removed from the mobo.

That is severe. That would be unbearably frustrating.

What I would like to know is what exactly is the purpose of this double booting, what does it serve? Other motherboards such as Nvidia's Nforce don't do this and don't need to do this. What tangible benefit does Intel see in endowing their chipsets with this annoying behavior?

I've only ever seen this issue once on my Gigabyte P35-DQ6 and that was after a BIOS upgrade.
My machine is powered down daily (but not unplugged) and it never double boots at all.
My 2.67GHZ Quad-Core has a mild overclock to 3GHz but it boots up first time.
