Mods: I know it's a Windows question but it's the gamers here I wish to discuss with.

Gamers: I'm currently running Vista Business 32 with the following specs:
  • E6600 C2D (stock)
  • MSI PowerUp Edition
  • Geil 2GB RAM
  • 8800 GTS 640Mb
Now, assuming drivers are sorted and all is well, what are the benefits in running top games in 64 over 32, games like Flight Simulator X, World In Conflict and new ones like Sim City Societies and of course, my preordered Crysis?

I notice a lot of you here run in 64 bit, just wondered if there was enough of a jump in performance to justify the bother of upgrading.

Thanks.

People run 64bit as only 64bit OS use 4 gig of ram or more, anyone in to gaming will be using xp 32 bit.
Virtually no games use over 2 gigs of ram maybe one or two might use just over that, even if crysis takes advantage of 64bit 4gig+ of ram all other games will be better on xp still so until overall vista is better for gaming there's really little incentive to move to vista.
People get 64 bit vista like i said because it can use 3.25 gigs and over but games actually benefiting from 4 gigs or more is still quite a way off.

I'm into gaming and I use 64bit :)

Now MS are forcing driver manufacturers to release both 32-bit and 64-bit versions (to be WHQL'ed), then there is no reason not to upgrade. UNLESS, you have some old games which certainly do NOT work in 64bit. You'll most likely want to move to 64bit ready for when you get 4GB of RAM :)

Erm because everything is faster and better on xp 32 bit than vista 64 bit ? i think it's more a case of there's every reason not to upgrade yet as opposed to every reason to.

Vista 32 wins :) better performance and to many problems with 64bit, as browsing any forum will show you.

been using vista X64 for months now and it is a lot smoother OS than XP ever was for me and gaming wise im only seeing a loss of 5fps maximum, i see no reason to stick with XP.

I dont think I'd bother to upgrade if I was already using 32bit (unless you have 4GB).

Personally I went 64bit because I was building a new rig and thought as I was moving to Vista I just as well go 64bit, plus I went for 4GB whether I needed it or not! :D

I'm tempted to get the retail so I can start off with 32bit and then upgrade later one once there is enough reason to.

64-bit. No point in buying 32-bit at all, you'll just have to reinstall when you upgrade your RAM above 3GB.

Plus it works beautifully. No problems here with Vista HP x64, and i'm a bit of a gamer.

I got vista 32 free off my uni, is it worth paying for the 64bit version when i have this one? Running E6750 @ 3.2 with 2gb Ram and x1900xt, i play a fair few games.

x64 Vista here too. I have 4gb of ram. Since its the way forward it just makes sense. Stable, never had any problems with it here. Except woth Supreme Commander, but thats not vista, its the fact that i have over 3gb ram and it takes a fit. Theres a fix in the GPGNet forums its called the 3gb enabler. Basically just patching the supcom.exe file.

There were modern benchmarks done showing what you are saying here as untrue. I need to dig them out... but it basically showed Vista being better than XP for the majority of games and Vista 64 being the faster.

Im on Vista x64 with 4 GB memory and Q6600....

Crysis single player demo uses 37% of my CPU and 2037mb of memory.....

Therefore.... x64 isnt advisable for some games but for others it is.....

I put vista 64 on last week and I really like it, i have vista 32 on my laptop which is a similar spec (apart from the graphics) and i find it quite a bit faster that that.

I have a dual boot system on this pc, but having got used to vista on my laptop, i now havent had any reason to go back to xp, other than to see what a difference there was on 3dmark when i got my new video card installed this week (about 80 points being the answer).
