64bit. Everyone keeps saying 64bit has more problems but it doesn't. I think people assume it has the same problems as xp64 did.
Performance between x86 and x64 is pretty much the same in games: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_nvidia_windows_vista_driver_performance_update/ Faster in some cases, slower in others.
Plus a few games (and it is only a few) have dedicated 64bit modes which run faster. Crysis for one. Got about 10% more fps in 64bit mode.

Erm because everything is faster and better on xp 32 bit than vista 64 bit ?

Erm things are faster in Vista 64bit, not to mention the huge improvements to memory management and the kernel (for Vista). 64bit is the way forward, simple. The OP asks Vista 32bit or 64bit, to go 32bit you have to either have a critical app that DOESN'T run on 64bit, or you have to be nuts ;)

Echo modo77's comments....

Yes, and at the end of the day you can always dual boot Vista 64 and XP for the odd title not compatible :-)

XP64 performs the best for me in gaming. Once there is a valid reason for me to upgrade to Vista (like when I get a DX10 card for instance) then I will upgrade to vista 64bit. Untill then though, XP wins hands down.

Yes the majority of problems are presant in xp64, with 4 gig ram the hit to performance in vista isnt really noticable (except crysis for one reason or another)

I have vista 64 and XP 64 installed, i rarely use XP now that most the bugs have been ironed out

Erm because everything is faster and better on xp 32 bit than vista 64 bit ? i think it's more a case of there's every reason not to upgrade yet as opposed to every reason to.

thats a complete lie, when is the 'Vista 64 is evil' routing going to be dropped? 64bit vista is running a fair clip faster than my old xp32. Only problem is that the itunes toolbar doesnt work, but foxytunes easily fixes that. That is truly the only problem ive found with vista64 in the month ive had it.

Has nothing to do with a Game using more than 2GB of Ram as said at start of this thread, Vista itself is hungry esp Ultimate and all eyecandy gadgets etc I like.

2GB is the sweet spot for XP and high end Games since F.E.A.R, CoD2 , BF2 etc (all proven by review sites to run better maxed with 2GB of Ram.

I have ran Vista64 Ultimate on both 2GB and 4GB, and its far better on 4GB even without gaming.

I have 2 issues with Vista64bit (will be same for XP64), My CRT Drivers to get proper RES/HZ/Colour .ini dont work on Vista64, other APP I can get by without as I got a Sidebar Gadget does same for Internet Speed.

Have 64bit Vista and only problem I have had is with file trasnferring but gaming is totally fine. Would'nt go back to xp.

Ive had problems with slow disk read/write, it takes a LOT longer in 64 than 32 bit vista. I think this is because the drivers for my controller card (adaptec29160) are just bog standard microsoft built ones. Adaptec cant be arsed to write some proper ones :[
