Hi bought something from the well know auction site. I aimed to colelct but paid by paypal as I was going to get someone from work to collect for me. At first he took a week to give me his address and no contact number. Eventually I wrote a letter and was called by the landlord at the house he was living at and told he had passed away. He said he would contact the family and see what they would do.

Today I got another call and the guy said can I not claim from ebay or something. I said no that the money had been taken and transfered to the "deceased" account and that someone is going to get my money from the account. He also said he could no find the item for sale as his son makes them at work and all his stuff has been cleared from work.

What a pain. I cant be sure its not a con or not.

Can I obtain a refund from paypal or ebay or even my credit card ? There must be something in place if someone dies ?

Yep was doing that as you typed. Money has been drawn out and cant find anything about if seller dies.

Had a claim once through paypal and they wernt helpful at all. I won case and got nothing back.

Same here they're useless. If the seller transfers the money into his bank then paypal cant and wont give you any money back. But if the seller really has died then surely he wont have transfered the funds and you'll be able to get the money back.

No he transfered the funds then died. Im always suspicious, but I think he has really died, although I cant find any news of a fatal accident in the Exeter area on October 17th. Im going to call his works tomorrow. You are right paypal dont want to know most of the time. Just wonder if anyone has any sort of insurance against this ie paypal or ebay.

just do 'item not received'. through ebay/paypal and forget all the other stuff you found out about him. He will have 7 days i think to respond  and when he doesn't then you will be refunded automatically

the bit about him emptying his paypal account might make this a bit hard .
and have your :rolleyes::rolleyes: back

Either get it back from Paypal if it is a scam.

Or if it's not then claim from the deceased person's estate.

I vote for it being a con though :(

makes no difference if hi pay-pal account is empty, it will be taken from his bank account. Or if there was some money but not enough in his pay-pal, then the difference would be taken from his bank account. Even so, its payl-pal who refund the buyer. How they claim back off the seller is upto them.

He died after withdrawing the funds?

Looks like a new (sick) scam to me.

I don't quite see how it could work as a clever scam though. If the bloke takes everyones money then dies it's not as if he can spend it. Or maybe he planned it to have a bigger wreath at his funeral.

I can see the headlines now "Mass Internet Auction Death Wave" Undertakers across the country have been overwhelmed by the latest auction scam on the well known auction website where unscrupulous sellers are selling items, collecting the money from their buyers and then dieing without sending out the items purchased. When asked how he felt about scamming his buyers one internet fraudster replied ".................." and stared lifelessly at the interviewer.

:p

what is the mans ebay username

item, 180168028632

Bit odd he had a jeep for sale, then had another, then invoiced the guy who and left neg feedback. When I rang his landlord he said someone has been contacting him about a car he had for sale. The rock sliders he makes at work which ties up with the picture.
