people's opinions on the above...

was looking at the asus silent square, but apparently it doesn't fit in the p190, which is the case i had decided on (max clearance of 10cm...) may need to rethink my choice of case.... or go watercooled!

You may want to sort that sig out - 20kb max.

As for the cooler then the Tuniq Tower is perhaps the best air cooler but the AC7 is the best value.

I have the Noctua NH-U12F in my P182 - no space issues, great cooler.
Previously I had the Arctic on a AW9D-MAX build, its really good for a budget cooler, probably best value, but if you want to overclock and you have another £20 you can do a lot better.

Bit more expensive but worth it for the cooling and quality over the Arctic that's been suggested: Noctua NH-U12F. Have a look at the reviews on google and in my sig. :)

Cheers for the replies all!

one more question, which may prove more difficult to answer... will a noctua fit on an 'asus maximus' mobo in a 'p182'?... deffo won't fit in the p190 due to the double walled insulated sidepanels! ( already started going off that case due to the 'overkill' psu anyhow... apparently it has power balancing issues)

mishima - cheers mate! that was one hell of a read.... :)

But what is the actual best CPU cooler out there at the moment? (air cooling) there are plenty around, but i think the poster wants to know the top of the range one.

Probably the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, from what i've read. Try finding the CPU cooler revew on Anandtech. It's a bit expensive though over the 120 non-extreme for just a couple of degrees cooler.

Thermalright IFX-14 is slightly better than an Ultra 120, but then again it is massive... Also build quality of the Thermalright can be questionable and you may need to Lap them... If you want good performace without the possibility of hassle then the Tuniq Tower 120 is certainly worth looking at..

Review here of the IFX-14 vs Ultra 120: http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=126195

Also some nice info in that review on best fan configurations

here is a round up form another oc site
Thermalright IFX-14 (Initial tests show it to be very good but may not beat out the Ultra Extreme, awaiting more reviews...)
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (New 6 heatpipe version of the Ultra-120, the best cooler currently available!)
Thermalright Ultima-90 (Already tested at several degrees better than the Tuniq Tower-120!)
3RSystem IceAge 120 NEW! (Very few reviews but so far appears to be slightly superior to the Tuniq Tower 120 in some circumstances with the fan on high, comes with a fan cantroller but does not seem to be widely available at this time)
Enzotech Ultra-X (So far superior to the Scythe Infinity by a degree or two and about equivilant to a Thermalright Ultra-120 due to the larger diameter heatpipes used on the Enzotech which is also the advantage the newest Thermalrights have)
Thermaltake V1 (Some tests are showing this to be a little better than the Scythe Infinity and almost on par with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme!)
Tuniq Tower 120 (The reigning champion, [Not anymore!] back in stock)
Thermalright Ultra-120 (One of the best cpu coolers only a hair behind the Tuniq)
